Do you tell your OH the truth about horsey expenses?

I must confess I am 'economical with the truth' when it comes to how much gets spent on the beast. My OH thinks DIY livery is £10 a month, the horse gets new shoes twice a year and only eats grass! Does anyone else do this or am I a baaad person?
 
I find it hard to be honest with myself never mind my OH if i thought about it too much i wouldnt have them.
2 horses, shoes, feed, shows, services etc easily £700 per month eeek! Thats more than my share of mortgage and bills - crazy eh!
 
My OH does not ask, probably because it's my money I am spending. If he did ask I would tell him.

He knows how much lessons are, because he has treated me to a few as presents.
 
I can be a bit vague at times. Bearing in mind OH is a mathematician, this can be quite tricky.

Find best strategy is to "justify" why horse needs certain item. ie massage pad - no probs, but OH blissfully unaware that horse has a magnotherapy rug (not acceptable unless scientifically proven).

Should add its his earnings I'm spending. Toddles off to the naughty wife corner!
 
Blimey LH, thats more than "economical" with the truth!!

My OH is pretty clever, and knows EXACTLY how much horses and their up keep cost!! I think if I told him to keep a horse was only £50 a month, he would look at me, and say "...and the rest!!"

He knows how much full livery is, how much shoes cost (and how often) and how much vet bills can be!! Mind you, it is good in a way, at least he knows where my money would go!! I'd rather be buying my horse new shoes and rugs than a new dress for me!!
 
I pretty much tell him everything, but then I don't think he gives 2 figs if I buy a new rug etc. He buys plenty of things for his 2 wheeled steeds that I don't question :)
 
sorry, thread was supposed to be lighthearted! :( To be honest he is actually not at all interested and it is my own money I'm spending.
 
Yes, but I'm quite lucky really for 2 reasons. My husband is an ex semi-professional body builder which is far more expensive than horses believe it or not. He has qualified for Mr Britain on a lot of occasions, the last time he was about 10 weeks out of the finals and he fell off his horse and damaged his shoulder, so couldn't carry on training and therefore compete, so we wasted about £1000. The time before he qualified and the final was 2 weeks later, so to keep him in condition cost us £500 just for 2 weeks food, supplements etc., that was on top of the 12 weeks of dieting we had just paid out. For every comp he went in it would cost us £2000.

Now, if i buy a bit for £90, which I recently have, he isn't bothered about it. He just says if they need it buy it.
 
I remember when my parents used to pay for my horse ... they were both as bad as each other - they would both say ..."your mum/dad doesn't need to know he broke his rug, the new one will be muddy in a few days so he/she won't notice"
So BOTH my parents belong in the naughty corner with you :D
 
He doesn't ask so I don't tell him..... however, he isn't stupid and does have an idea of some of the costs..... Fortunatly it is all my money not his! Although how I am going to break it to him that we need a new MW turnout is currently beyond me, as I haven't bought a new one in 6 years..... oh bingo I think I have the excuse!
 
My OH cant be economical with the truth where costs are concerned as I know exactly how much everything costs and can spot a new bit of equipment at 500 paces ;) but then I never have an issue with mony spent on horses. :p
I dont have the issue as my boy costs me a big fat £0 per month. :D
 
My OH sometimes asks what things cost and I don't lie, however, many things have been mail ordered to work and go directly to the yard without passing home, not that he would have a problem, maybe it's me that can't be bothered justifying my latest whim to myself!.

Although hoss is paid for by me in full, I feel I should justify what I spend as we are also furnishing a house and i feel i need to justify why b needs that extra rug, more than we need curtains in the guest bedroom, etc.

OH doesn't really mind, and give him his due, when b had a problem with his foot, OH was there when I was talking to the farrier asking if there were any lotions, potions or supplements that would help, farrier said 'Keretex, but it's quite pricy' and OH pipped up, that doesn't matter, he needs his feet! Aaaaaahhh!.

However, OH sulked with horse for 2 weeks after I spent nearly £100 on BE entries and we made a 200 mile round trip and B dropped me at the first jump XC! he actually called him an ungrateful little knob. I have to say i agreed!. :D
 
If my dad really knew he would have a fit. This is the first year I have really taken over costs because job pays better and more regular work for me. He never knew I owned Winston, he didnt find out until I sold him, still thought he was a loan. And it was only last week he asked why there was a extra pony in the field (shes been there for a month and a half now) whoops. He has noticed that they arent costing as much at the moment lol. Long story short mum is only payin the rent now, I pay everything else.
 
Hubby had vague idea. But sadly he decided to put it on a spreadsheet & was horrified to find it was over £10k a year! I knew as i kept a full record for my self. But i work hard & earnt more than he did, so i didn't feel at all guilty!
 
what they dont know will not hurt them lol toffee44 same parents or Oh have just noticed new pony no way am i going to admit now have 10k worth of ponies sat in my field that belong to me. I pay for everything so no harm done.
 
Humm sometimes I write a cheque out for something horsey and on the cheque book stub put something innocent like Tesco's! I'll get caught out one day but by then the money will be spent & he'll laugh at how cunning I was, which is something I am not renown for!!!

That has really tickled me :-) Sorry not that you fell off (!) but the reaction of your husband...mine would be EXACTLY the same!
 
My OH is pretty good, he knows how much I spend on Harry but he also knows it's my money and I have a second job to make sure I have enough. He is good at treating me though when he knows I can't treat myself hehe :)
 
Hehe, I love all your stories! I too am in the naughty corner... but I'm pretty sure my OH knows how much things cost and just smiles and pretends to go allong with it. He is very very good! As long as it doesnt get crazy, he says it makes me happy so will go allong with it!

However, I do have to be economical with my mother... even though I am a 20-something, I still need to justify my purchaces to her whenever she notices new things (she does alot with my horses whilst I'm at vet school)! She thinks that I just got a new Bates dressage saddle on e-bay for £150.... humm... *crawls away to naughty corner*
 
My OH knows exactly how much I pay and never complains, although he does ask loudly why Cappy needs yet another rug! Also he has said we do not need another horse, how wrong can you be.:D

Errrrrrrr............no. i am just very vague about the whole thing. If he is around the yad when i am paying farrier/instructor etc it is quite hilarious as he follows me round trying to see what i am writing in the cheque book or how many notes i am getting out, i usually tell him things cost half of what they actually cost! But then i do go to work, soley so i can have the horses, and i don't spend money on clothes and things, or at least very rarely and if i do it is a primark special! so he doesnt really mind, just cant quite believe how much things cost. Plus he has his own interests which cost money so it's a two way thing!!
