Long story short, approx 20 months ago i had to give up my job at a Riding school due to ill health. I developed M.E and tried working through it and no longer could. I am now on the road to recovery, (and desperately poor) and starting to look for a little bit of part time work. Am i kidding myself that i would be able to go straight back into horses, or even that somebody would give me a job? I have the experience and some qualifications so that parts not a problem, its just my health that could be. I will be quite limited to the amount i would be able to do to start with and will have to work a very steady pace as i start building myself up again. I would be more than happy to just do jobs like tack cleaning, filling haynets, grooming etc which wouldnt take to much out off me, but would anybody really pay me to do just these sort of jobs? (I don't think so but would love to be proven wrong!)

Do you have any showing yards near you? It might be an idea to see if they need a groom, afterall tack has to be cleaned after every ride, horses have to be spotless etc..

It's worth a try

On reading this I thought, would I pay someone to groom, fill haynets and clean tack and to be honest the answer is no.

However I only have two horses and on a yard with many horses the extra help may be worth employing someone for.

The only problem there is bigger yards usually have the staff they need who do these tasks already.

Yeah i think you may be just a little bit to far from me.

Im glad to know that there are people out there who would give me a job. I have been thinking about putting an advert in the local tack shop, paper etc but keep convincing myself that nobody would want me. Ill get on and do some ads now though.

do you have a riding for the disable near you they are always on the look out for helpers, this would give you the an idea that you could cope and then use them as a reference

I have chronic fatigue and have been dealing with it for years (very similar).

Of course someone will want you, but you must be honest with them about your health. I've managed it, but had to start VERY slowly and build up my work load over a couple of years.

Its frustrating, and I still come close to relapse now on occasion when I think I'm invincible, but time is the key, and sadly, I am not and never will be anywhere near as fit and strong as I once was.

BUT, I did find someone who took me on despite my problems as he was desperate for help. I was honest with him, and despite a few relapses and a heart condition I'm still there, fitter and stronger and tuned in to my condition, so I never get to the point where I have to let him down because of it.

Its frustrating, and there will be times you wabt to give up, but start slowly, maybe a couple of hours a few times a week and it will work as long as you're sensible.

What about talking to your last employers, maybe offering a few voluntary hours a week until you're fitter? They know you, so this may help.

If you ever need to chat, PM me

Good luck xxxxx

How about house sitting for people with horses/ animals? You might need to pick your jobs according to the workload required, but you could work at your own pace and when you felt well enough.

Animal Aunts always seem busy or you could advertise locally.

Good luck!

I think you stand every chance of finding something - especially if you aren't fussy what you do to fill the hours - eg if the horses aren't taking so much time but you don't mind pulling weeds in the garden, or helping with the ironing, walk the dog, then you may find someone who is rushed of their feet trying to get it all done, who can use you more in a yard over the winter but less when the horses are turned out in the summer. Also, I find it easy to fill positions for people to ride the horses, but harder to find someone to do just yard work. I think your positive attitude at wanting to do it will help you get what you want. Stick with it, I hope it works out well for you, and let us know when you find your dream job! x
