I bought a 5 year old cob which i have had for a year but he does not seem to be progressing as he should. he was 5 stage vetted and all his x-rays came up clear.

He has physio once a month as he has suffered from a sore back which we put down to the saddle and changed it.
however, he struggles to pick up the left canter lead even on the lunge although does get it eventually.
when cantering he throws his whole weight onto the inside and does not seem to be able to straighten up.

i have booked him in for a lameness work up in 2 weeks (closest they could do) but does it sound like he may have a back or hindquarter problem? anyone had this before?

at the age of 5 and knowing how slowly cobs develop i'd suggest he's probably just not strong/balanced enough for it yet...
however - prob worth getting a back specialist out to check - i tend to stick by the rule of if you have a niggle about something then its prob true if that makes sense?!

hmm thats what i was thinking i suppose at least its peace of mind if i do.
something isnt quite right but im not sure what it is!

yup tbh i'd be the same! so i'd get a back person out
but it does sound like age to me - it took my horse over a year to get a good canter on both reins when i got her - after having been ridden all her life with no contact/not correctly - she couldnt' canter in arena/on lunge at all for the first few months - it does take time for the to build up strength and balance etc

i know but its been about a year of being ridden, hacked, lunged, hill work, pole work and good management. he seems to really struggle rounding his back and i just wonder if its a physical problem or something else.
its been very frustrating really...

Is he shod ?Might be worth getting back checked my chiropracter who i got out for my horse said he recomends back checked twice yearly hope you update us on how he gets on
