Do you think he is in pain

Took my boy out today first time in 3 weeks, when i got on him he was a little more up himself then normally but put that down to him being taken away from his little mates.

Anyway went up the road and he jogged a fair bit and then calmed down went another 10 minutes of him being fine and then came across others out for a hack, kept my distance so he didnt see them but when we got a little way into a track they were there, my boy decided he was going to start bucking and kicking out which he done all the way along track whether he could see others or not, got to near the end of the track other horses no where to be seen and my boy decided he was not going any further and just kick hell out of the hedge, I got off at this point and he stopped, lead him along rest of track and up the road for a bit and then got back on, he was fine for about 5 mins and then started bucking and kicking again, so I got off and led him home. Actually he dragged me home, i have arranged for a equine physio to come and check him out.

Him bucking and kicking like that is out of character for him so do you think I done the right thing in getting off and walking him home or should I have stayed on and hacked him home. There is no obvious reason why he has acted like this, ie not lame. Just a little confused as he wasnt ridden in summer for 12 weeks due to farrier problems and when I did finally get back on him he was an angel.

i would have got off checked him over then hacked him back if all looked ok, because he might do it next time if he got away with it this time x
 
Do you normally ride out in company hun? Might be adviseable to do so for a few weeks, then start slowly getting him back to being used to going out alone, as you would if he had never gone out alone before x
 
I did get off check him over and he seemed fine, had to lead him to a hedge that i could climb up to get back on and he was fine for about 5 minutes and then started to buck and kick again for no aparent reason, so got off and lead him home
 
We always hack alone and even though he may have a little paddy when leaving home he has always been fine. In fact before today i would have let a complete novice go out on him
 
Has he put weight on during the bad weather, or indeed lost weight? if either of the above have happened the saddle may not be as comfortable as it should be.
 
A bit random but did you have an exercise sheet on?

I rode with one on the other day and the fillet string had come undone, my horse kept shooting forward, I didn't realise until I got off what was making him do it!

If it's unusual behaviour for him you did the right thing. It may be nappiness, but it's always wise to check for pain before getting firm with them.

Personally I would call out the vet for an overall check-up and go from there.
 
Well I got vet out cause couldnt get hold of physio, vet didnt find anything (not that he really looked must admit dont rate him much but he was the only one available).

Last weekend thought I would try a short hack staying close to home, anyway after 20 minutes he started bucking and kicking again so got off and led him home (at least we were closer this time).

Got vet again on Monday (different one this time) and she gave him a thorough going over and found a sore spot on his back, so now he is on box rest till weekend and on antinflamatories (sp). I then have to take him for a short hack and see how he is, if still bucking and kicking then vet is going to arrange for a chiropractor to come and have a look at him.
