newish horse so first winter with him. he's now been clipped for the 4th time since end of sept. his coat grows back really quick and thick. he's fully clipped out and in a heavy 370g turn out with neck cover, with a light under rug underneath and pretty much same at night. his hair is quite 'starey' (think thats right expression), i.e seems to stand on end and his coat grows back so quickly. the parts that aren't clipped, like his saddle pad bit is soooo thick, like a cushion! he gets adlib haylage both in and out of stable and his rugs are all brand new so in good condition. weight is okay and is pretty fit. he always feels warm ish to the touch and base of ears are warm but not too warm. is he cold or is it just him??? he's 6 yr old and tbx connie.
dont want him cold but cant honestly see how he can be!!!!

Fully, fully clipped? Head and legs off? Is so then he might welcome some leg wraps as he'll lose a lot of heat through them. He does sound cold if his hair is standing up- could be a sign of a virus though. Mine was like that for a couple of days and not himself either; I think it was just a mild virus so I had him extra wrapped up for a couple of days and then back to normal, he's been fine since. Does he seem himself or a bit quiet?

If he's quite fit he might need more rugging to stay warm (or less off when you clip if he's not sweating).

Maybe try a close fitting under rug such as those sold by snuggy hoods, dress circle, etc. They are supposed to be good at stopping clip regrowth. Bit like thermal underwear!

Some horses just have a poor coat so maybe some oil needed in his feed to try improve his coat condition?

However, over the last few days my two, both fully clipped out with legs left only, have been wearing two 400g full neck turnouts! They were not overly warm and were infact cold with their usual 400g combo + 200g standard rugs on! But we did have -2 degrees during the day with heavy fog which seemed to make it feel even colder! Back to the 400g + 200g arrangement today. But there is also a pony at my yard with a blanket clip who wears a 100g rug and is toasty warm so they are all different!!

If it is of any help I also have a tb x connie and am currently on my 4th clip, and expect to do at least one more after xmas! His coat grows incredibly quickly and thickly - as he hunts he is fully clipped bar his legs and half face and the contrast between the clipped and unclipped is hilarious!

If your horse feels warm and he is holding his weight, he is fine - his coat is just due to the native in him so don't worry!

thanks, he is fully clipped face legs and all! just find it all bit odd. he is his normal self, full of life!! but maybe some leg wraps at night mite help!
