well all i can suggest is to go to a few local shows and see how he goes

(but im not a showing expert)

he looks good in the pictures

I dont know anything about showing other than they like to see them fat!! *gets ready to be slated for that comment!*

His marking are quite uneven, I'm not sure if that would count against him? He's a little fitty though, I love that patch of black around his right eye, looks like he has eye shadow on! I would say your a good size on him.

What a sweetie - you could defininely show him at local level in both coloured and cob classes. You need to decide if he is going to be a traditional or hogged/plaited and trimmed - his mane would have to be grown out to be a traditional.
Maybe show him in hand a few times to see how he copes with the show environment, and that will also give you a good idea if he catches judges eye.
Size wise you are fine....
Enjoy!

I noticed your location is Chesterfield, there is Wingerworth riding club just off m1 j29 and High Moor show off m1 j31, they are both quite good shows to go to as a starting point. I used to go to them sometimes when I lived closer.

If you wanted to show him as a cob then he would need to be hogged and trimmed.

As suggested above try some local shows this season and see how you get on
grin.gif

Just to add: Don't be disheartened if the judges do not like him, showing is VERY judgemental (yes I said it!!!) and SOME judges often have in their head what stamp of horse they like before anyone has entered the ring.

Of course you can! Go along to some local shows, get him sparkly clean like in the pics and...HAVE FUN!!!
smile.gif

You could do coloured classes, RC horse pony if he'll do a jump, Handsomest gelding classes, best turned out....there's all sorts of things you can do.

The world of showing is a funny one, but I think if you just go and enjoy yourself and don't worry about the politics of it, it can be great fun. I mainly like the getting ready! I have done all sorts of showing classes with my hairy coblet of unknown parentage (and I am 25). We don't win much but we do normally get a rosette and he likes showing off!

1) Personally I'd hog and trim him, but that's your preference whether you want to show him hogged and trimmed or traditional! Get out to local shows and see how you do!

2) Of course you can!! When I first got Genie I was 22 and she was 14.2hh

3) I think he's a lovely looking chap. At the end of the day showing is down to one person's opinion so that's a hard one to answer! Some judges will love him, others won't.

4) No you're not!

Just enter the local shows, get him sparkly clean and go enjoy yourself!

Your age is irrelevant - I am 45 and show my 14.3 mare both in hand and ridden M&M.

You could show him in coloured classes, working hunter, ridden hunter, in fact, anything really at local level, just to get some experience under your belt. As some else has said though, if you are going to show him as a cob he should be hogged.

When showing in coloured classes, the markings should not actually be taken into consideration except maybe as a last resort - the class should still be judged on the horses confirmation, action, manners, schooling and general suitability for the class before his markings are considered at all. However, as we all know, personal preferences can sometimes creep in to a judge's decision......

you can do local cob and coloured classes on him, and totally agree, any horse that white should win
smile.gif

there may even be other classes hes not quite perfect for but still enter and have fun!

Go, have fun and enjoy your day! As said already showing can be a funny old past time and only one persons opinion is given on the day. I know my lot aren't perfect, but I go to local shows anyway and have a fab time!!!

Any horse can be shown!

As others have said, trim him up (particularly legs), plait him up and have fun!

A lot of showing is down to judges own personal preference. In all the classes I've shown my Cleveland Bay youngster, we've been placed behind Welshes with pretty heads... think the judges have a preference?

He is a sweetie, and as others have said I would try at local level. I too would say to hog him or plait and do away with the feathers if you are going to show him this year. I am only suggesting to remove the feathers because he does not have that much and this may count against him if you were to show as a traditional. You don't have to hog and clip feathers to show a cob, that is untrue.
It depends what classes you are going for and how you are showing him either as a show cob or traditional.
If the latter then he does need his mane to be longer and also as I have mentioned previously his is lacking in his feathers.
Whether that could be corrected in time as he only 5, I am not sure as he may well be bred like that.
I have a Gypsy vanner who I took to his first show last year. He was 9, but green ( now 10 this year) but people have said he looks younger as he has a baby face. He was placed 4th in a big class that was for coloureds and spotted at a local level. I was really proud of him that day. He does have a lot of feather though and he would never be hogged or have feathers clipped out to show, he would always be a traditional.
I am no show expert but a friend who does HOYS and CHAPS classes have said he is a nice sort and has a nice face which is not plain like a lot of cobs are. He has a bit of class about him.
Personally I think the OP's horse would look better plaited and feathers removed rather than hogging as it gives her the chance to see if the feathers will grow more in the future, and will give the mane chance to grow too. I know my boy's feathers grew loads after I had cut them off, but he had, had mites and 'bog burn' when I got him which were treated and then they did really well, but his sire and dam had good feathering so it was in his breeding as he is well bred for a vanner.
He is a very pretty boy though and I too like the markings around his eye as it makes him stand out.
Good luck

No ur not too big!
smile.gif

Yes you can (and should if you want to) go for it!
smile.gif
showing is great fun (although not everyone will agree with me!)

If you want him traditional as others siad he has to grow his mane and tail long and flowing (think loreal/pantene ads!
smile.gif
) but that will mean he can enter the coloured class but shouldnt enter a show cob class (as show cobs as clipped and hogged! although I got beaten by a traditional in a show cob class at christmas and i have to say was royally P*s*ed about it! but ho hum!)
In terms of whether judges will like him, some will think he is really strikingly marked, others will mark you down for the unevenness of the markings, or the too much white, or others will say not enough black etc etc it is very opinionated even at affiliated levels when often they have "mark schemes" (sort of)

so long as you have the right tack and turn out for him and yourself, I think going to some locals to start off with will do no harm whatsoever, and he may realise he loves it or hates it!
smile.gif

If he jumps as well you can take him into working cob classes!
smile.gif
or performance classes which are normal shows plus 1 jump or something like that!
I also agree doing a couple inhand might be a good start at first just to see if the whole situation suits you both!

Good luck! and takes pics for us at your first outing!
smile.gif

Thanks guys, your all so nice!!!

We had to pull his main as half was missing and the person we got him from cut a big bit out at the top. I know you can do this for the bridle to lay in, but it was big enough to fit about 4 in!!

I would like to let his main grow, I think they look better with long one, but also like them hogged. Plus OH would never talk to me again if I hog it!! (Thinks King is his horse even tho I paid for him!!!!!)

No idea re showing but wow what a gorgeous horse. You look absolutely great on him too. He's a real cracker and looks so kind as well as handsome.

I would show him as a native - he does not have enough feather for a traditional. You need to grow his mane a little more and carefully tidy it - you want him to look like a Welsh Section D.

Tack - you want a hunter bridle and a 1.5 - 2" noseband to help with the white and the head shape.

You need to be in a tweed.

If this helps, this is Chancer at affiliated showing last year as a five year old. The main difference with turnout to what you need, is that with my chap, he is a traditional, hence the longer mane, though in this photo it is still fairly short as he has a lot of filling out and muscle to develop on his topline before he can carry off a really long mane.

Chancerjpeg.png

I would not hog and clip out -he is closer to a native type than a show cob. Show cobs are generally very close to the 15.1 height limit unless a maxi cob and have more bone and bulk than your chap shows in the pictures, hence I personally think he would be better shown as a coloured native type.

You can do coloured and cob types classes with him at local shows, but not any M&M classes. This year with my chap I am also doing working cob classes, some shows/associations do allow traditional as well as show cobs in these but you need to check.

If you decide to go further, BSPA and CHAPS are the coloured societies to register with. I am with BSPA as this year I want to have a stab at RIHS.

Go and out have fun and see how he gets on.

Finally, unless you are doing a colour and markings classes, then this is irrelevant as the class is judged on the horse and its performance/conformation etc as any other show class. The only time colour could be taken into account is if this is the final factor to split two horses.

Like everyone else has said start local and see how you go.

[/ QUOTE ] I second this i show Lucy and some judges love her and others hate her i even walked into the ring once and as i walked passed the judge she said "yuck chestnut mare" so i left the ring. I'm 26 and Lucys 13.2hh we can't show any higher than local level as she is not a reg m&m so i'm to old (not shore on the rules for colourd classes) but at local level we do tack and turnout, Family pony, working hunter pony, handy pony, Prittyest mare, veterans and anyother class we can poss enter. We just have fun.

At our RC the cob class is open to show cobs, traditionals, and welsh cobs (presented as M&Ms) so what you say is not necessarily correct for all shows at a lower level.

OP - For RC and local shows you can certainly show him (I can't see your pictures so I can't comment onhis looks) and you should get a feel for how well he does and whether it is worth trying anything at higher level. Just go and try it.

With a coloured cob you should either leave feathers on and grow the mane and tail long, or you should hog and trim. Plaited cobs in cob classes are not normally seen (though I'm no expert) but may be in coloured classes.

As well as ridden and inhand classes for coloureds and cobs you could consider working cob classes (or if there isn't one working hunter - cobs tend to do well even alongside hunter types). There are often classes for best turn out etc too and maybe fun classes, classes for style and so on that you could try, it depends upon the show.

Don't try classes that he isn't suited to, such as ridden hunter (should be hunter types) ridden horse or hack (as these refers to a specific type).

Best of luck though and have fun!

sorry yes in an open cob class i would be ok with it, but its a show cob class (which is why i was miffed!
smile.gif
but as i say cud just be coz they beat me!
wink.gif
hehe)

i agree with TF's advice about the leaving the hair on him, I think coloured cobs look lovely all clean and flowing!
smile.gif

but then again I love the Humdinger too who is a coloured show cob!
ahh i just love em all!
grin.gif

Laurawheeler - iv had this happen too, walked into a class and the judge went eww cob! (all others were poncy skinny show horses!
smile.gif
) so I thought screw you, did a fab show, and the others were fine or went bonkers, and she had to place us highly and then said "lovely stamp of a horse" its like DAMN RIGHT!
grin.gif
hehe

its just the way it goes sometimes! showing should be fun, and if you ever find yourself not enjoying it, its time to take a break and reapproach or do something else for a bit!
smile.gif

Thanks Kitsune, and everyone else for saying nice things about him!!!

Kitsune sometimes I could give him away, he's so loving gives you kisses and comes when you call him, but likes to use his build!!!! On fencing that is, hes never pushed me but things like fencing, water bolws, anything that gives when he leans on it, he will try to push over for fun!! Apart from that he's 100% in everyway.

aww hes lovely! give FMM a pm about him, she is very experienced in coloured and cob showing and im sure would be happy to help
smile.gif

No advice from me as I stick to boring riding horse/LW hunters/WH

What a sweetie he is!

I would aim him at coloured classes rather than show cob classes. He isnt really tall enough to stand a fair chance and a coloured in a cob class will either be loved or loathed especially without symetrical markings.

If you go for coloured you wont need to hog and if you show him plaited you can cheat a bit (with experience) and make him look like he has more topline than he does (not a surprise at his age).

I love his eye patch - if there was a fancy dress class you could go as a pirate that would go so well with his eye marking!

At local level you could also do in hand classes such as handsomist gelding.
