Do you think I'm asking too much/too little (loaning)

In September when I go to uni a friend of mine will be loaning my horse 4 days a week (mucking out only 3 days though).

This girl, while not the best of riders, is very reliable and kind to horses and I'm really pleased that she will be loaning him. I am happy for her to take him to competitions and basically do what she wants with him (although I know they will be doing mainly hacking).

I am planning to ask her for £20 a week to help with costs, plus £10 if she wants to use the trailer (that's how much it costs to park) does this sounds reasonable or should I ask £15 instead? Bear in mind she is a young girl, in her last year of school and will only have a part time job.

Really don't want to take the mickey, but I will be at uni full time so will be broke!

I've not been in a similar situation so am not sure how much others charge but that sounds reasonable to me. It would cost her at least that to have a lesson a week and my DIY livery is £18 a week without all the other costs, so for 4 days worth of riding and getting to use your horse, that sounds like a good deal to me.

Will your friend be able to use the horse at weekends, or is this just a week day thing??

I suppose it depends whether your friend is actually doing you a favour by mucking out and keeping your horse fit for you to compete/ride at weekends.

If she has pick of the days she can ride and the option to compete etc then I would say £20 is fair enough, but if she is sticking to the days you stipulate, I would say that you are getting a pretty good deal for her to look after your horse in your absence for nothing!!

She gets to pick the 3 days in the week (when she will also muck out) but ride on Sunday (no mucking out) because I will be riding him on Saturday.

If she wanted to compete on a Saturday it would then swap round, I would do Sunday and still muck out both days.

I think thats quite reasonable. I used to charge £15, but only as my horse was out 24/7 so I had less bedding/ feed costs.
It would cost as much, if not more to have a lesson at a RS every week!

my mare is for share and i've had a a few ideal people interested, she is going to be £35 a wk with no chores just riding to do, inc is chance to compete and have access to transport, the fee is just to cover her livery.

I was in a very similar, if not identical, arrangement and I was paying £20 a week. I didn't have to pay for use of the trailer as we had our own, but I did cover all my own costs of competition, including new kit the pony needed ie. showing saddlecloth, show pony browband.

Her older sister is my best friend, who told her that I was looking for someone to loan him. She then rang me to ask if she could do it. It's doing me a massive favour, as it will keep him ticking over while I'm at uni, however the horse she used to loan can no longer be ridden so it's doing her a favour too - she couldn't afford her own one.

I'd say thats pretty fair, if your horse is nice enough that shes able to have lots of fun with him.

In that case I think I would not charge her..as otherwise you'd be stuffed, I may be looking for a loaner come september and I wont be charging!
