hi guys...Ted was in his stable last night due to the bad weather we had...anyway he was fine last night when I left him...this morning however his hock and down his leg towards hoof is swollen with heat. I have rubber matting and shavings in stable - not loads of shavings but have bought more today to go in there...rubber matting not great but ok...could it be capped hock, but then would it be swollen down towards his hoof too? have checked his hoof nothing in there, no puss or anything. no obvious wounds..have cold hosed his leg and turned him out today to see if would help with the swelling am going back up now to see how he is and bring him in!! thanks guys! x

Hmmm. I've only ever seen capped hock in horses that have little or no bedding to lie on and it is easily recognisable by the tennis ball sized soft lump that appears on the hock joint. It can also affect the front elbows. If there's swelling all down the leg it might be that he's slipped in the stable or something and sprained the leg. I'd keep on cold hosing, make sure he's got a deep bed and if it doesn't clear up in a day or so, or if it gets worse, call the vet just in case x

we think he may have been kicked...have cold hosed it and he is in with a deep bed! he hasnt got a tennis ball sized lump thank god...so not capped hock. have also give him some alphabute. x
