To keep a dog from a puppy until they are 8 years old in a kennel in hope that they will find a home?

This is my friends dogs story..

http://www.epic-adventures.eu/p/podenco-rescue.html

She is such a lovely doggy and has a nice home now.. but it must have been so awful what she had to go through - she is still totally traumatised and the most nervous dog I've ever met! My friend said when they got her the kennel people couldn't do anything with her because she would just throw herself on the floor and wouldn't move so they just left her in the kennel. :(

How long do they leave them here before they would PTS?

No I don't think its fair. It sounds as if this girl has now got a lovely home, but it is also likely she will never really recover to live a normal life.
The Dogs Trust state that they will never put a healthy dog to sleep, and in some cases I do not agree with this. As in horses sometimes pts is the kindest thing to do.

It's a difficult one, look at racing greyhounds they are kept in kennels all their racing careers until they are too old and they hopefully get a place in a rehoming centre. Luckily my boy was only 18months when I rehomed him but some of them in the kennels with him at the time were about 6. He does suffer now with a bit of claustrophobia and gets panicky if he gets stuck in a small place but I wouldn't say it had any lasting damage. But yeah I think there should be a limit on how long they keep them somewhere like dogs trust.

As I read it the OP is talking about a dog stuck in rescue kennels with no socialisation etc. very different to greyhounds or indeed many show dogs which are kennelled but exercised daily and taken out and about. The latter are generally fine when taken into a home tho may take a while to adjust.

Yeh I'm sure dt do, but it is minimal , they are always looking for volunteers to help. The dog in op is abroad and I get the impression didn't much.

Glad you friend has finally given this dog a home. I think if the dogs are socialised and have time to be dogs then fine, but not stuck in a kennel 24/7.

Ps did you find the owners of the two dogs you found.?

To some extent it rather depends on the kennel environment. The rescue I work at has heated kennels, all dogs go out twice daily, are socialised with other dogs and people and rehabbed where needed. It is no replacement for a home but is a better life than many have ever known. It sounds like this dog was just dumped in a kennel and left to it - if someone had put the work into her she wouldnt have been stuck there for 8 years in the first place. Imo 8 years in rescue is no life for any dog.
