I bought a 3 year old Welsh sec a mare a few weeks ago, she has a really large stomach but I don’t know if she’s just got a barrel tummy at the moment or if she is pregnant… what are your thoughts? I will get a vet to take a look but thought I’d ask for your opinions too! Please see the attached pictures!

Spoke to them… apparently the stallion did escape so it is possible that she’s pregnant 🥲

I'm sorry you've ended up in this situation. What a terrible lack of responsibility from the breeder. It's so easy to jab them after an accidental covering to prevent a pregnancy, but to just ignore it, to allow the possibility of twins and then to offload onto some poor unsuspecting person is the worst. I would see if the breeder will have her back so it becomes their liability again. Perhaps they have a more suitable pony you could have instead.

It’s awful really! Luckily the yard I am on are like family and we will be able to get through this, I wish it was so simple but she was bought for my 5 year old daughter who is obsessed with her! I was planning to back her summer time but that will have to wait 🥲 I’ll keep you all updated on what vets say !

She's gorgeous! Are you going to be able to keep a foal? Just read The Mule's comment ... I know you haven't had her for long, but you do get attached and would it be fair on the pony to be passing here back and forth? Difficult situation. Have a vet check her out and then you'll have certainty. Good luck, whichever way it goes.

Did they say when this happened? It will give you a timeline as to when to expect the foal. She looks fairly far gone. Is the mare registered? If so I would be asking the breeder to do a stallion cover certificate when you confirm she is pregnant. Then the foal can be registered also. It’s not what was on the cards but it won’t do the mare any harm to wait to be backed. And if you’re into showing, it will be a good way to get her out and about if they have any mare and foal classes so still putting in training.

You might find the mare stays sweet and amenable and your daughter can do short rides with the foal at foot.

I will be keeping the mare as she’s progressed so much with me in such little time! I can accommodate the foal too luckily ! Thank you will update you all when I know for sure if she’s in foal x

Hopefully he was another Welsh A and they will register the foal for you it's least they can do considering what has happened.

Not ideal for her either only being 3.
Yes I’ve spoken to them, was definitely another Welsh an and they said they will sort the forms for when the foal is born! And no certainly not ideal she’s only a baby herself isn’t she, just got to do whatever I can from this point ! X

No they said they aren’t 100% sure when it was & yes she is rather big!& they said they will sort forms when she has the foal, they breed to show their ponies all over the country so showing her and the foal could be a good plan before she’s backed! Thank you for your comment :)
