Hiya,

my mum bought a 5yr old mare 3 months ago, the lady had had her for 6mnth before this & we have been intouch to see if its possible she was around colt/stallion at the place before this, she rang them and they arn't sure as they apparently didn't have her long and know nothing about before they did :( anyway the last few week her teats seemed a little big she constantly stands kicking her belly but last night when she came in her teats had loads of white tiny spots around her teats & a very tiny peace on the end of one nipple... she doesn't like me touching and kicks but teats feel full and she has swelling infront of her udder aswell... her bag is no way what id expect for foaling but if shes maiden i no they can be hard to tell, her belly isn't massive but then it has got slightly bigger since shes been hear, she was a little thin not best condition when we got her so its possible shes just putting some weight on.
Do mares get these tiny milk spots if not in foal & do you think there is a chance she could be?? We aren't fussed either way but just want to be ready and have an idea weather to scan her or not so we can watch her properly. I have a quick few pics i took will add ... Thanks :)

pic i took today

pic i took last night she had loads of tiny white spots all on her teats

belly...

well iv only had one previouse mare who we bought in foal & she was a well established brood mare huuuuuge belly & massive bag dripping milk but never a maiden wich with her age id presume she is?? and i know they can be hard to tell with so just thought id see what people thought & if we should get her palped as we'd hate anything to happen if she is we will watch her even closer.... thanks for reply :)

Mares can get milk spots like that when they are on clover we have seen maiden mares at the stud with them and they were here to be covered
It would be very helpful to see the mare stood up sideways on and your photo taken from the middle of her to get a full picture of how she looks if you can do that please

she isn't on any clover, infact she isn't even on any grass :( we don't have any... the wet winter has trashed the field there are a few blades of grass coming up but its 95% mud! we are moving yards on the 1st they will have plenty of grass then :) ... posted pic from the side below, thanks

To me, she looks like she had a foal in the past. Those teats look like they have been suckled, if you see what I mean. But she doesn't look 9 + months in foal. However, I'd get the vet out for a rummage. .. to be on the safe side :-)

Cheers guys... I didn't think her belly looked like a pregnant belly at 9+ month either Ginnie but was just unsure of her teats, i only have geldings, mum has mares cant say im a big mare lover tbf & i cant really say iv looked at the teats of a mare thats never foaled to compare to, i did try googling it but only came up with pregnant mares! :)
