Was at yard this evening riding outside in the school. Now due to planning restrictions there are limited lights in the school area. Basically one light which gives plenty light for schooling and thats it. The path to and from stables is adequately lit by the light from stable barn.

Now it was pitch black and I thought I was last at yard as housemate had left about 15mins earlier. Well see another livery come out from stables and she clearly was taking note that I was in outdoor school. I finished schooling and was walking Fleur round to cool her down whilst speaking to my mum on phone fairly loud (handsfree

) and you would have heard me from stable block. Anyway all the lights bar the school light (thankfully for which the switch is elsewhere) suddenly go off.

Que me Fing and Blinding loudly to my mum about how irresponsible and dangerous it was knowing full well I was in the school. I now had to somehow get horse back round to her stable through pitch black as the school light was at the wrong angle, I would only of had my light from mobile (i.e. zilcho squat) to light the way.

Well about 3 or 4 mins later the lights magically go back on, whether she suddenly had a brain wave a couple mins after leaving, or heard my swearing or saw my car (she would have seen it within 5 secs of switching off lights due to where it was parked) I don't know but she saved herself a very sarky and rude note.

Didn't like the woman anyway but this just added fuel. I keep my pleasantries as no point to do otherwise unless she does something semi dangerous. (if she hadn't turned lights back on she would have darn well known about it

awwwwwwwwww rant over cookies to all that read it all!

oh I so would be very tempted but she doesn't go in the outdoor school unfortunately well put it this way I have never seen her do so as shall we say a few people are a bit scared of going out in the semi dark (fine with me means never have to fight for the school in winter

). Actually half tempted to speak to YO not about incident but about fact she is clearly coming down twice a day which is not allowed in our contracts which I'm sure YO isn't aware of and if we did it we would get a serious warning as it contradicts the planning rules again

Which yard are you on in Exeter- I used to live there....I would love to know what was running through her head after she turned the lights off... then on again....I can only imagine ha ha.

Grrr can you not chuck all your horsey pooh into her stable lol.

Luckily out arena is just outside the stables, if anyone dare turn the lights off on me, they know it would start a war!

Can't believe there is a yard rule saying you can't go down to the yard twice a day! Nothing on this earth would stop me seeing ours at least twice a day, if not more. What an odd rule...

I would have been seriously peed off if someone had switched the outside lights off while I was still riding.

Why aren't you allowed down twice a day? thats a strange planning rule !

It all comes down to the extra volume of traffic on the roads. DIY is not allowed on the yard for that reason. Once a day the yard must turn out or bring in or check depending on what is happening with the horse. You are not allowed down twice a day as that would be extra car journeys which means the YO is in breach of the planning requirements that allowed her to convert to a livery yard (away from cattle farming). There is a very eagle eyed neighbour who actually notes if people are making extra visits if they come past their house as they were refused planning permission for a livery yard because the one I'm on beat her to it and planning think the additional traffic from a second yard would be too much.

If on DIY the4n yes I would be down twice daily but with the yard turning out in the morning it works very well for me as I leave for work at 7:20 and then come straight to yard from work at 6pm.

hmmm i hope your livery isnt to expensive.....i dont think i could cope with rules like that. What about if your horse got sick or something, would you not be allowed to keep popping up to check on progress?

yes and no! If it was that sick I would just stay at the yard all day (allowed as only one journey

) but otherwise no YO would check for me and has done in the past i.e. when Fleur midly coliced a few months ago. There is always someone on site and the YO and grooms are very knowledgable so I trust their judgement.

Sometimes it is annoying but no yard is perfect and in reality the livery bills are very reasonable as good quality ad lib straw and hayledge are available from the yard which I know saves me a fortune in hayledge as between the two use over a horsehage bale worth a day easy. And the set up just works really well for me. Good all year round grazing, good facilities, hacking and vitally backup to look after the horses if I am ill/away.
