do you think strangles shoud be a notifiable disease?

personally i think yes, strangles is a horrible disease with serious welfare implications. i wouldn't like to go to a show and find that someone was there with a horse that has been in contact with one with strangles, and believe me, people are selfish enough to do that.

African Horse Sickness
Contagious Equine Metritis
Dourine
Epizootic Lymphangitis
Equine Viral Arteritis
Equine Viral Encephalomyelitis
Equine Infectious Anaemia
West Nile Virus

No my vet said it wasnt but i think it deffo should be. when we had an outbreak in our area last year people on infected yards were still going to the shows! even the ones outside the area

Notifiable diseases relating to horses are covered by the Infectious Diseases of Horses Order 1987.

Strangles is not a notifiable disease.

I don't think it should be; yes strangles can have terrible implications if your horse gets it badly; but realistically Strangles is a very common virus & is often difficult to diagnose. Making it notifiable would be very difficult as often you can't be sure whether your horse has been exposed to strangles & if they made it notifiable a hell of a lot of people would come forward, which would ultimatly lessen the impact. I also think it would lesssen the impact of the system as I dont consider strangles to be on a par to west nile disease, or other notifiable diseases!

Besides it shouldn't matter whether there is a horse at a show thats been exposed to strangles or not, as an owner you should be responsible and do your best to ensure your horses protection from strangles by not letting it graze etc

I am another one who has voted no. I have had horses with strangles twice and the backlash I received from people in the area the first time was horrendous. The second time I took the same precoutions but told no one. My horses were kept on there own and had not been anywhere for a year.

I always believed it should be a notifiable disease. But on another forum the same debate was had a little while ago. And someone made a very valid comment, along the lines of "be careful what you wish for". Because with notifiable diseases also comes the possibility (not certainty, but possibility I would stress) that someone could find your horse had stranges, come onto your property and have the horse PTS. So I am now firmly in the no it should not be a notifiable disease category.
