Please leave comments on whether horse racing should be banned within the UK. Do you think its fine to go to the races as they are all treated fairly. or do you think its cruel to have so many horses slaughtered every year due to the fact they just didnt make it?

I think you are making a fairly sweeping statement in your conclusion that the number of horses slaughtered in this country are all ex racehorses. There are plenty of horses bred by people from insane or unsound mares who are never any good and are slaughtered because they don't stay sound so you could perhaps look to ban them as well?

There is a wastage in racing as in many sports but as plenty of people on this forum will tell you, alot of ex racers go on to be excellent riding horse and have a great life.

Much of the wastage of horses in this country is down to irresponsible breeding - I should put a bit of time and energy into stopping that if I were you.

no and no

its no more cruel than it is to be breedign dartmoor hill ponies/welshes/newforests then lobbing the unwanted in an incinerator.

In short, no I dont think it should be banned...

A heads up to others though, I think some younger members from the facebook groups may have migrated over here, so go gentley.

Of course it shouldn't be banned, like anything it can be improved in lots of ways, but not banned.

What's all the talk of banning things all the while, has everyone gone banning mad?

I might quibble with a vegan or strict vegetarian going to the races (and personally I don't) but plenty of animals of many species are slaughtered each year for a variety of reasons, mainly food, and race horses probably aren't generally as badly off as, e.g. factory farmed pigs.

Having said that it certainly isn't the part of the horsey world I'm most proud of.

In Ireland a large percentage of the horses going for slaughter are ex-racing TBs but those are still a lot better off than some of the cobs left to starve. So, no, not all sides of the racing industry are pretty, but there are worse things out there.

Are you going to offer your opinion on the matter or just expect others to contribute to your thread?

AND FYI not 'all' race horses are slaughtered when they don't make it...think you'll find an awful lot of them are in happy secure loving forever homes, see the numberous threads on here.

No it should not be banned.

If it where, millions of £ would be lost, an entire industry of people would loose their jobs, thousands of tb would be slaughtered/ flood the Market, thereby bringing the value down even further.

No way! What would happen to all the people who work in racing? And if the reason behind banning it is because loads of the 'no good' ones go to slaughter, what do you think will happen if you ban racing altogether?
I'm racing mad & had the best years of my life when I worked on a racing yard, I know those horses are treated like royalty. I do however, feel like there are areas in which the sport could be improved, racing them at 2yo for example...I think the age limit needs to be higher.
But racing is constantly being changed, having more rules put in place to make it a better sport. There are aspects of every sport that need to be changed, for the animals sake..but I think banning horse racing would be a really unwise move.

No, for many of the reasons posted above.

I can think of plenty of other things that should be on the 'To ban' list before the fluffies start on racing and slaughter houses.

I read yesterday that public flatulence was banned in Malawi

Simple answer - NO - and I am not one of racing's biggest fans.

I think that the racing industry as a whole needs a complete overhaul but banning would just be simply ridiculous.

Yes and while we are at it lets ban everthing that involves horses getting injured or not making the grade shall we.

Lets put thousands of people out of jobs, brilliant idea.

no. and maby you should get your facts right? only a small portion go for slaughter after racing and thats genraly when they are injured or totaly unsutible for another job. most go into breeding, polo, point to point or get retrained and sold on.
as said above is there nothing left that people dont want to ban?!

.......Making mental note......musn't go to Malawi.....musn't go to Malawi.....:)

Nope, but I do think it would be more fun if they got rid of the jockeys, put food down one end of the coarse, let them loose and then see if they wanted to race ;)

Ooooh... if they do that, my ex-racer could race again! :D

Look, I've already got her in training. ;)

This is what happens when they spot someone in the yard with a bucket ^

'It's TEATIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Look how she leaves the AA and the arab for dust. :p

i hope not as i work in racing and i can speak for my boss and know that all our horses that don't make it we always find good homes for as riding horses and allot go to play polo and if they go to the sales just because there not up to class in our country some go abroad to race and have a successful career over there

I don't think it should be banned at all no. How silly. If we banned racing we should then ban eventing, showjumping, polo, polocrosse, driving.......in fact just ban riding altogether eh!

I do think racing needs an overhaul in general and 'they' need to take more responsibility for the 'wastage' as the idea of 2 adn 3 yo perfectly fit and healthy horses being destroyed cos they don't make the grade doesn't sit wwll with me at all. However, the industry has made some steps towards this with the TB rehab centres. I just think maybe more money does need to go to this rehab places though.

It is certainly not as horrific though as the plight of the dartmoor/welsh/NF ponies who are just breeding out of control, dying of malnutrition or just ending up going to the sales and straight to the meat man cos they're worthless to anyone else and there are just too many of them. Something SHOULD be done about that!
