Do you think the appearance of your yard is the most important thing ?

I go by appeareance, the staff, how it's organised ie: what the tack rooms look like and how the horses look

Now see this is what I've always been taught and people viewing my current yard think it looks fab, its spotless, tack rooms are neat, staff happy and approachable, schools good and website says any needs catered for: In reality once you've been there a while you relaise the YO is the most unapproable person ever. the tack rooms leak, the school floods, there is no sick paddock, special needs do not get met and the horses and people are miserable!!

So how do you tell if what you are seeing on the surface is actually what you will get ??!! Choosing a new yard is very difficult and un-nerving ....................

i think if it's a yard where the owners , or their own staff, are going to be looking after your horses then really the yard ought to be fairly tidy and workmanlike. However, if you are diy and your horses management is down to you, cosmetics aren't that important...as long as the fields are correctly maintained (and I really hate barbed wire and to be honest not that keen on post and rail unless it's really high) and you are happy with your stables, appearance isn't important in terms of buildings etc. If the yard is actually sloppy though, (people leave rubbish around and poo etc) then whether diy or livery, it might be quite irritating..
