I've used them for towels etc to take on holiday. They do make thing little, but you only really notice if the item is 'airy' in the first place.
I think they would be good for rugs- just make sure they are REALLY dry before you out them in!

you can get these from the catalogues (sp) that come through the door from time to time or places like wilkinsons (for much cheaper than the link- about £8-10), i've used them for quilts and things and they're good but you have to be careful that you don't take too much air out of them as they can split if you keep going after a certain point of flatness. I would think they would be ideal for rugs, you could probabaly slide them under your bed even, just don't forget they're there!
