she's had some time off (nearly 9 months) due to arthritic changes so i turned her away after going down the injection route and it sort of helping, i thought some time in the field would do her good.....well she did good alright!! she is on a diet NO hard feed just vits and muzzled during the day.....so here is the start of the maisie moo fat club, weighing in at 493kgs!! on day one.....she's in, clipped and back in work!! will post a weekly report for those interested. or maybe pelly would like to look at this....

my feather eating wally looked a lot like her after a couple of weeks in the summer paddock, she is now back to normal after spending the rest of the summer on a near bare paddock. her old owner did warn me she was a good doer,i didn't realise just how good a doer she was!

I wouldn't have though letting her get to that sort of weight will be any good for the Arthritic changes. Also looks a very good candidate for laminitus!!!!!

I think OP is aware, and that is why poor pony is being forced to diet and do equine aerobics.

She's shockingly thin, I have reported you to the rspca and the ILPH, How dare you keep a horse that badly. Starve it from food.

How the hell has she not got laminitis!?

I had a cob on loan who looked like her once - he owner left her for 6months in knee deep dairy pasture. She was, if possible, even fatter than your mare. I have no idea how she wasn't crippled with lami!

I think OP was being sarcastic. In that photo it's in anything BUT good condition LOL.

It is slimmer than a pony I met recently, but that was so fat it's legs chafed when it walked (well waddled). Sadly, that's no joke, and even more sadly it had suffered laminitis several times in it's young life

I think you need to try a different weight tape too OP - the Dodson & Horrell ones are apparently the most accurate. I'm no expert but would be surprised if she only weighs 493 kgs TBH. Most weight tapes are inaccurate but you need to know her correct weight for worming etc.

I'm surprised that anyone let a horse with arthritic changes get that large, sorry, but that's just my opinion.

Wow, she is fat, isn't she?
It's awful how fat just creeps up on you. (have the same problem meself
laugh.gif
)

I was at a veterinary talk last week about equine obesity and the suggestion was put the horse on long grass with a muzzle, rather than bare "stressed" pasture, as that has more sugars in it.
restrict the time on grass, and when in the stable feed well-soaked hay (takes more nutrients out, but leaves the fibre)
A rep. from Bailieys was also saying that to feed just a handful of ordinary cubes was not good. She suggested to feed a mugful of lo-cal balancer in some lo-cal chaff.

Sorry if I am ranting on and you already know all this, no offence intended, just sharing.

Best of luck with your dieting!
Look forward to the photos!

wooo she is a chunky monkey at the moment isn't she? Still, it's the ideal time of year to start getting the weight off. Mine has lost around 100kg in the past year.

Whatever you do make sure she has plenty of fibre. Soaking hay for 24 hours and feeding loads of it worked miracles for my ponio last winter.

Good luck and i look forward to seeing your weekly updates

i would agree with that statement, but catch 22, she needs to move, being stabled stiffens her but even on restricted grazing this is her, it's due to not being excercised enough, hence she now has muzzle time!! farrier been and no signs of laminitis, now she's back in work she'll come round quite quickly....

Oh bless her i think she looks lovely. Yes a few lbs to shift maybe (but haven't we all!)

I think she's a tad overweight but also she looks like she's naturally cresty anyway which i think excentuates her size. Some horses are just built this shape. Think i've seen worse and I'm sure once the grass drops back she'll lose weight no probs won't she. Not all horses are as prone to laminitis either to be honest. I know everyone worries but generally you know your own horse don't you.

echo some of the above comments - am very suprised she has not had Laminitis yet. Shes very obese and the cresty neck is not a good sign.

I don't understand why you are telling the OP something she already knows? Her post says the horse is fat, it explains what she is doing about it - and how.
So what is the point in everyone saying 'Oh, she's so fat, she'll get laminits' when the OP clearly knows the risks and is taking action. It is brave of her to post this pic as an example to people of a fat horse, needing a change in management.

im not knocking her, i respect them for posting it and taking action before it gets worse. However they couldnt have expected all rosy comments.

I'm not saying the comments are wrong...just some seem quite antagonistic given that, unlike the other thread of a horse in poor condition, the OP is clearly very aware, and is already taking action.
Why can't everyone be as kind and tactful as I am?

I didnt see the other post - however to be IMO (and im not talking about above post and judging it by the showing world) it seems more acceptable and less frowned upon to have a fat horse, when someone that could have a skinny/lean horse would be frowned upon and in some cases be branded as a "rescue case".

Shils - i aspire to be as kind as you.
