This morning someone said that Tricksy looks thin and noticed she looked tucked up in the field yesterday - what do you think?

She is a 15hh Welsh D x, 15/16 yrs.

Despite being unclipped she is actually quite fit. My vet was here today doing vaccs and I asked his opinion, he said to keep an eye on it.

Yes i do think she looks a little bit tucked up in the last photo?.= I think she is the right weight going into spring though, esp if she is fit.

Wouldn't hurt putting a little weight on, but I'm sure the spring grass will help with that nicely. Can't see anything obvious from the pics though.

Often people will say a horse looks thin because 99% of leisure horses are VASTLY over weight.

Yours looks spot on weight wise but does look a little tucked up like she just finished a reasonably hard ride.....

I would just work on muscle tone and top line

Pretty girl by the way

I think some Welsh Ds are quite long in the barrel and when they aren't carrying too much weight can look lean (mine does at the mo) At this time of the year tho that is better as they will soon chub out when the good grass comes in, then its back to limiting their grazing, can't win!!

I think she looks ok considering it's the end of the winter and she has been hunting through the season. I think cobby types tend to look a bit run up when they are fit because of their shape and I'm sure she will pick up now the grass is coming through

As soon as the grass comes through she will balloon

But in the meantime I think I will add some haylage in with her hay.

She doesn't look quite as good in the last picture but if she's fit and just beginning to lose her winter coat as ours are, she looks fine. I'm sure that in a month's time you will be far more concerned about her not putting too much weight on. Do you monitor her weight with a weight-tape? They're not particularly accurate for cobs but do give you a means of comparing weight week-to-week. If you can feel but not see her ribs she's spot on.

No I think she looks fine. I have a Sect. D and he is looking ALOT worse than that at the minute. I think the breed is prone to it getting a bit stressed. (mine is a complete stress head about everything.) Wind, feed, very very scary rugs yesterday that caused great panick and the need to canter and buck up and down the field when the farrier was here.
Mine can go from looking great to looking starved overnight (literally!) so as long as she doesnt get drastically worse I wouldnt worry as she looks good

No, she is fine. You will need a buffer for when the spring comes. Much rather they run up a bit light at this time of the year. Much better that than the other!! The grass is jumping already.

I think she looks fit to be honest. Not one I'd worry about if I saw her out in a field.

Are YOU worried about her? You know her best of all.

Coat changing never helps, and she looks quite long as well, not helped by what appears to be high withers which visually makes her look a bit fine behind. I've been accused of having a thin horse at the back end of winter when in fact he was perfectly fine, just hunting fit, but it DID make me stand back and have a good look at him, which is no bad thing really.

Yeah maybe a bit tucked up, i dont think she looks too thin tho. Cant see any ribs, she looks quite long though which might make her look thin. Shes got a lovely kind face tho!

I also think she looks fine. We are so used to seeing overweight horses that when we see a horse in fit good condition like your lovely mare we think they are underweight...

Looks like you've done a great job with her and she's going into spring just right. Lucky you!

I think she looks ok, i dont think she looks particularly tucked up and wouldnt be too worried, tbh id rather she looked like that now as at least you have a bit of leeway when the grass comes through!! it wont be long now id keep doing what youve been doing she is lovely

Well i have lost 10lb and it was bloody freezing poo picking in the field yesterday morning so no wonder I looked a bit tucked up

ha ha no seriously I think that she looks good weight wise, a little tucked up in the last photo but it could be the angle of the photo. This time of year its hard, just monitor her weight. the grass will be through in no time

QR: Wow - I am overwhelmed at the amount of replies - thanks guys

I was very surprised at the comment this morning, she certainly doesn't look thin to me, but as I see her everyday its sometimes hard to be objective with your own horses, which I is why I asked your opinion.

I added haylage to her hay this evening and will keep an eye on her weight - but as lots of you have commented, as soon as the grass comes through I just know she will be on a summer long diet

There you go.... Merlin looks nothing like he did in the summer, eh??? I hate the way he looks at the moment.... but at least when the grass comes, there is some filling out to do, and he wont just bloat immediately

I can see he has lost a bit on his shoulder but this is the worst time of year, they can often look a bit ropey but as always Merlin looks very handsome
