I said that earlier! But they ignored me!! I love him - he's hilarious! I even lolled at the going over backwards bit - where he starts eating grass while he's still on the ground!

I think you sound like you are showing off, not other people on the thread. The video was posted and people commented. As is normal in such cases some people found it good fun, others worried about the pony's welfare, and others thought it was dangerous for the child. No one else has mentioned their riding experience, how often they fell and what a great rider they are now.
For the record I rode bucking ponies as a youngster and fell off endlessly (I even have a bucking horse now to keep up the good times!), I have also ridden without a saddle (including a period of 4 months when the horse was injured in the girth area and I did do lateral work and work him on the bit - the two are not incompatible!), and I still feel the video is sensessly dangerous. The girl is not falling off while she is trying to teach the pony something useful, she is just falling off.
P.S. I'm a pretty decent rider as well

No need to have a go!! I used it as an example of how riding ponies like this tends to help you become a decent rider ultimately - not as an opportunity to blow my own trumpet. There are many other people on here who are far more deserving of the accusation of showing off. If I was regularly posting pictures of myself riding, and telling everybody how fabulous I am - then fair enough. However, I don't, and my postings are generally either silly, an attempt to help someone who has asked for it, or grumbling about something.

I thought it looked a bit 'staged' and rather amusing - except the rear. That was possibly not part of the script but since it appears to be inconsequential, was left in the footage? Pony didn't appear overly bothered to me and I was laughing at the unceremonious and mostly undramatic dumpings the rider was getting.
Maybe the girl is play-acting and hasn't quite thought through teaching a pony to misbehave might not be so funny to someone else. Maybe the pony is never to be sold so it's not important. Does anyone know, exactly?

what an interesting forum H&H is - we have people almost coming to virtual blows over the idea of some school children eating chips in an Edinborough st and at the same time we all seem pretty relaxed about footage of a per-teen landing repeatedly on her head falling off a naughty pony

perfectly sensible to me. We all fell off ponies onto our heads repeatedly as kids. In doing so, we knocked any sense of proportion and any residual sanity out to make room for more concussions...

Ach she'll be right. She has a hat on, and they aren't exactly high speed falls. I've face-planted off many a little scrote of a pony and lived to tell the tale- suspect I'm not the only one too!
Chips you say? What I wouldn't give for a bag of chips right now...

I disagree with those who had sympathy for the pony! he girl has guts and tenacity and will get it going by sheer determination alone. She will be a better rider than most because of her determination and the way she is learning balance.
Personally, and I rode many, many sh1 tty ponies like this I doubt there is anything wrong with the animal except that it has learned how to misbehave and drop its rider.
Not nice when it went over backwards which the rider did aid by pulling on the reins but she was bareback too but notice that the darn pony started eating grass when still down. It was not at all perturbed by what happened.
As a child riding ponies bareback and with only rope halters I fell off one pony 17 times in a 500 yard length of field. He would chuck his head down, head down the hill at a bumpy trot and then stop dead and buck as that pony was. Every time I came off I took him back to the start of the field determined to make him go the full length without eating or dropping me. Took me over two hours (most of those trying to catch him) but I did it in the end. he never did it with me again.
Many ponies can be horrible and will only go for a child rider when the child has outgrown it. WHere do you think Thelwell got his ideas from?

I wonder if there are many very long in the tooth (as I am) people on here looking at this video with a whimsical smile and a little snort and giggle viewing this video. Drifting back to our childhoods with fond memorys of all those little gits we rode and came off - or sometimes flew off! But clambered back on board without an ounce of fear or resentment for the feisty little Thelwell that almost always wanted us upside down on the ground?
Oh and where was out hat, our back protector, our parents rushing across to lift us to our feet and usher us into the emergency ambulance?
Watch it for what it is - a bit of fun - a near miss from the rearing (well thats riding for you folks!) - bet that kid is some rider when they grow up?

Totally agree with you here the kids do look quite competant riders with a hell of a lot of guts to keep getting back on. I wonder too if she deliberately tipped the pony over when it reared - hopefully it didn't try that one again. As a kid I would have enjoyed a pony like that! I also had a horse called Zebedee - because he always went 'boing' with his previous owner - she would be bucked off at every meet. After I bought him he tried it with me - I didn't come off and he never tried again with me - yet carried on dumping other riders. I loved him to bits.

I had one just like the pony in the video when I was a kid, he was appropriately named Crackers and I loved and adored him - I fell off more times than I can remember in the first year I had him but boy did he teach me to ride - my brother then inherited him and went through exactly the same ritual humiliation (much to my amusement) - in fact I think he fell off him more times than I did.
I suspect those knocking this kid have never learnt the lessons that ponies like this can teach you.

My pony is very similar!!! (well used to be!)
He is just a little ****!! watching the clips of it being schooled, my NF is the same. Luckily after 6 yrs (and various calmers & hormone balancers!) he has finally started to calm down.
He has never reared over backwards on anyone though!!

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who learnt to ride on ponies which liked to 'test' you. My first pony was an angel for me, aged 5, and a s*d for my sister, aged 9. Once I got a bit older, he started to do the same with me as he had with my sister.
Horses do have personalities, and not all behavioural problems are pain-related. I think she's brilliant!

Well, I am obviously of the same ilk as you.
Boasts were either "Well I stayed on longer than you!" or "Well, I did three strides of canter before he dropped me."
Surprising how a nasty mean little pony often settled when two of you got on board and charged around together!
