Do you think this is a fair Livery Yard rule?

I'd tell him to get stuffed personally. If he's getting a kickback, then fine - he can advertise all he wants, but he can't force you where to take your service. I've heard of yards where you have to buy their hay/straw. I've heard of yards that only allow one or two select farriers on the yard. But this is taking the pee.

sounds stupid to me , i have 4 horses on my yard and dont shoe any of them , costs me a fortune in coffee and biscuits and i am a farrier , the owners can who they want as long as they pay the rent , no they are really good , their farrier is a mate and shod for them before they moved here , why change ?

What if you don't rug? or don't clean them? I hardly used the heavyweights this year so not planning to clean them. The middle and lightweight stable rug go in my washer and have replaced the lightweight turnout and probably the middle one.

My friend is now being charged an extra £2 a week OR will be asked to leave if she keeps using a different rug cleaning company. Apparently she isn't "supporting the yard financially." So ridiculous.

And yes, "BHS approved rug cleaning service! indeed

Excuse me? What?

I know where I'd tell him to stick his £2pw. And then I would demonstrate what REALLY not supporting the yard financially means - and move elsewhere.

H sounds like a complete control freak! Wouldnt like to be married to him. Can imagine he holds the purse strings, probably has all the tinned food in the kitchen facing the right way, towels perfectly in line. Reminds me of that film with Julia Roberts and the controlling husband!

Back to the question, crazy mad rule! Would vote with my feet and leave!

reminds me of a yard i use to be on - wanted us all to use the same farrier!! Also told me that i was not to use a certain transporter again - i said my horse and i decide who she travels with and if you dont want them on the yard then i will just load on the road - obviously not on that yard anymore. its a livery yard not a prison!!

'As far as I am aware, there is no such thing as a BHS approved rug cleaning service'
thats because it's total BS! ooft for goodness sake YO must be on comission from laundry company... i know because i run one!

I think its ridiculous really. I dont do livery yards. I like to have control of my own horses not have someone else telling me what i should be doing with them.

Worked on a yard for ten years and as long as you repsected the property and the staff then you were pretty much left to your own devices RE feeding/shoeing/competing etc.

I wouldnt be on a yard that tried to run my horses life for me or told me what i could and couldnt do with/to my horse and our possessions.

Mad, frankly. He has no right to dictate this.

Yes he does, it's his yard. If the area has no other yards with as good facilities, and people don't want to move, then they have to pay it to stay on the yard. It's the joy of capitalism, supply and demand :D

ask to see the credentials of the 'BHS approved' rug cleaning company, of course you may need to be ready to move your horses to another yard pretty quick as he probably won't like being questioned;)
TBH i'd move anyway, my horses which i make the decisions for!

eta, just had a little look on the bhs site about their approval scheme and it doesn't seem to cover rug cleaning companies!! livery yards, schools, trekking centres and showing yards but thats it.
I would have to call his bluff and tell him there is no such thing and he can go stick his rule and if he argues tell him you'll phone the BHS to query his claim;)

I agree its mad but he has the right the liverys should move if they don't like it.

But he has no ability to enforce it. Unless anyone seen putting a dirty rug in their own car is thrown off the yard. Your rugs are your possessions, once they're off his property how can he know, or do anything about what happens to them? I don't think he's thought this one through at all.

OP just take your rugs home when they aren't in use, and what happens to them then on is absolutely nothing to do with the YO. Ignore the rule, its stupid. :D
