A lady I know is currently being talked into buying an ex race horse. She is buying it as a project. The horse is 4yrs old, 15.3hh gelding and since coming off the track has done a small amount of hacking but no real schooling or jumping. Apparently has a nice temperament but is hardly a plod (as would be expected).

Originally the sellers where asking 5k for him, but have now dropped this to 3k. I still think this seems like a lot of money as recently I purchased a nice coloured IDxTB rising 4yo nice breeding, very nice model and nice temperament for around 2k. I know the lady does struggle for money and works really hard for what she’s got. I really don't want to seem like i'm interfering but at the same time would hate to see her being ripped off.

Also I know this may sound mean but the lady in question is on the larger side (prob about 13 stone) so I am also surmising that a young TB with very limited muscle may not be the best choice.

Just wondered what peoples reactions were or whether this is actually a fair price?

Cup of coffee and some jammy dodgers for all.

That does sound a bit steep, I'm currently trying to sell a 5yr old ex racehorse and am asking just under 3k but she is pretty well schooled and fantastic to hack out etc. I'm expecting to be knocked down on price too. When i bought her off racecourse she cost £1600 so it is possible to get them much cheaper than 3k.

I would have said no more than 500 for it tbh!
4 y.o ex racehorse thats done nothing??
im sure everyone here could find one of them a hell of a lot cheaper than 3k, in fact theres a few in the field outside looking for homes.....

please warn her, in a nice way.
she sounds like she deserves a nice cheaper horse!

I agree with the above, this seems an extortionate amount of money for an ex racer who has done nothing

I also agree it may not be the best option for a bigger rider, although I'm sure that is contraversial and I will be ripped apart for saying so

I hugely agree - similar horses seem to be selling just above meat money at the moment as there are so many of them around.

Thanks - I did think it sounded on the steep side! I think i'm going to have to have a chat to her about it. My main worry was that even when she has bought him on, he will probably only be worth a max of £3000 and by the sounds of the horses above she may struggle getting that for him.

Expensive.
I have just sold 2 ex race horses. One was 8 yrs old and was really well schooled on the flat with fab paces and a big bold jump both SJ and XC. He was also 100% to hack, handle, shoe ect and a nice person. I sold him for £3500.
The other horse was a 4yr old, again nice paces and well schooled on the flat and had a huge jump both SJ and XC, ready to intro. Easy to do and hack- £3000.
I also have a 6 yr old TB horse for sale who has smart paces, working well on the flat and showing a nice attitudude towards jumping and hacking but is a bit of a face puller in the stable, I am asking £2.5 K for him.
So yep, thats expensive.

5k - ridiculous...

3k - still well overpriced...

Who are the sellers? Are they dealers??

Maybe you should try finding a horse for her and give her an alternative??

A friend of mine sold her 5 year old TB a few months ago for £750 including tack and rugs.

She was a lovely sweet mare, good on the ground and ridden, and had a cracking jump on her.

£3000 is way overpriced IMO.

That is very overpriced it is hard so sell a well schooled TB for more than 2500 i paid £2500 for mine a month after him being on the track and i think i was ripped off with that and he is really quiet and i am selling him for £1900

OMG, tell her not to do it.

She could get an exracher for under £1000, plus sorry vto be rude, bugt she is possibly to heavy, I am a little soft, but I am 12 stone and wll not ride youngsters. I just do not think it fair

Thanks very much for responses. I will definately have words with her. It is dealers who are selling the horse - I have a feeling they put it up for 5k so she now think she is getting a bargain at 3k.

Ditto! An OTT TB who's done nothing is often given away - or sold for meat money (which is where a lot of them go!) Hell, a friend bought a stunning TB filly 2 years ago - 2 years old - 17hh - bred and conformation to event at the Doncaster sales for £550 - and she hadn't raced! She'd have been cheaper still in the current economic climate!
