I have been lunging Jerry before riding him and he has been lovely, I think it really helps him to concentrate and saves a battle at the beginning.

I have been using the top field for this and so far its been fairly dry and we have managed OK. I realise soon it will be too slippy and was thinking that maybe I could use the used shavings that I have been putting down in the gateway to put down in the field in a sort of circle shape to lunge on.

Wat do you think? Am I mad? or would this work? So far the gateways look great. I know the field will get fairly churned up but at least it wont be slippy.

Your thoughts please?

I've done it before and it works. You just need to make sure you top it up regularly and flatten out any hoof prints.

Years ago before I had a school I did just the same with used shavings and also got local sawmill to drop lorry load of new ones as well onto an area where I schooled. It worked really well once they got a bit wet and worked in. Must be better than sliding about in mud and eventually they rotted down and disappeared.
Go for it you have got nothing to lose.

We used to use straw and shavings when we needed a lunging area for a youngster years a go. It's worth a try and see how it goes.

I did this and it was awful! As soon as it rained it went so slippery. Mind you, it was in an awful boggy part of the paddock. You could try it I suppose but mine went like quicksand.
