Do you tip your farrier?

No, I don't tip. He does an excellent job, I pay a good price. He gets "something" at Christmas. It's in inverted commas as he gets lots of bottles of wine and spirits and I like to be a bit different. I appreciate the service I get - prompt, excellent service, lovely chap who's keen and enthusiastic. I think I give enough back. I don't tip in the true sense but he gets a good wage for the work he does.

No I don't tip my farrier - but as he comes to do 3 full sets and a trim each time he always gets fed - either breakfast or lunch :)

Farriers must get a lot of whiskey around Christmas time!

No, I wouldn't tip. When my mare was particularly ghastly (not just usually ghastly) I'd bring an apology present next time; biscuits, wine, home-baked cake or something like that. Christmas present, definitely, but not a tip.

I don't understand this whole tipping bit. Someone charges me a fixed rate to provide a service, and I pay them that charge. Why should I then feel I should tip them? I don't mind leaving a bit in restaurants for service because the staff have personalized it by being very efficient or whatever, but no-one else. I do my job, I get paid and if I'm very lucky I might get a bottle of wine at Christmas or some chocolates, but I certainly don't put my hand out and just EXPECT something on top. If a taxi driver carried my bags to the car and then into the train station, then yes, but if he just picks me up and drops me off then forget it. Half of them try to rip you off anyway by taking circuitous routes.

No, I don't tip, I think he would be offended.
But I do make sure he's dealing with clean dry feet and legs, that he's paid promptly, that he knows I appreciate the quality of his work, and I get him a bottle of whisky at Christmas.

No, I don't usually tip - I wouldn't say I'm tight per se, but I don't have unlimited money to spend either on my horse, so tipping each professional/para professional for their services on top of what they charge would get even more expensive, very quickly! I figure, they set their charges taking into account all the costs they need to factor and to make a profit.

He get's a Christmas/Birthday present and he's used by my professional ties for discounted rates too - he does alright out of me :D

no, never thought about it. I always pay in full, don't see why i should give extra unless he goes way out of his way to do something. His bills will be calculated to give him a profit anyway.

I am totally with you,I assume these people are tipping the Vet aswell. They provide a service you pay for if they are not making enough from that its their problem. Sorry I dont tip anywhere even restaurants ,if they think they can charge for a meal and then expect me to subsidise their wage bill they have another thing coming. Charge the correct amount in the first place and then people have the choice of whether to use you or not dont start putting people on a guilt trip so they end up putting something on top.

I have 2 farriers, they're very good and I like both of them but I don't tip them, maybe I should...

Circuitous, word for today, I thought it was a polite word for fat people LOL.

I always offer sex, but being as we are both blokes and neither of us are homosexual, I am always glad that he declines, and I can breath a sigh of relief for the next 5 or 6 weeks.

My farrier is far richer than I am. I make sure the horse's legs and feet are clean and dry and he can work under shelter, and I pay him at the end of his visit. Tipping is a relic of the days of servants when they were not paid a decent wage and needed any extras they could get. I do not find it appropriate for a well-trained professional who earns a good living.

Nope don't tip mine, but I do pay around £225 every six weeks, he doesn't live too far either. He gets a cup of tea, shoes them inside and gets my witty banter while he's here

I don't tip, I earn decidedly less than my farrier (big fat nothing atm) so don't really have money to spare. He does get a cup of tea and two well-mannered ponies who are always in on time with dry legs though, so he doesn't have it too badly!

I have enough trouble getting my farrier to accept his fee as it is. If I tried to tip him he would be very upset. But, we do usually buy him a bottle of something at Christmas and I also make him tea and feed him plus he knows that when he goes to our food van he will never be charged. He also knows that if there is a reason I can't be there that I trust him totally and he will get on with the horses and even turn them out for me... at our other place he will go and trim in the field when it's dry! I consider him a friend as much as he is our farrier... he is great.

I'm another who doesn't tip my farrier, but I have the horses in and ready for him, and the kettle on standby for me to make him numerous cups of coffee whilst he's here. I pay him on the day. I'm one of a very small minority of customers who even give him a brew, apparently.

I don't 'get' the whole tipping thing, anyway, it seems to be all rather patronising to me.

No I don't.

I do give him a gift at Christmas (usually a cake as I know he loves it). I pay same day, give him a clean horse to work with that is ready as soon as he arrives and a coffee. He is very good, I have one shod and one not, he always checks the unshod one and says whether or not she needs a trim while he is there (usually she only gets trimmed once or twice a year). He is slightly more expensive than other farriers in my area, but I think he is worth it (and he only lives a couple of miles away and that is always a bonus).

I don't tip the vet or the dentist either and apply the same rules to them, clean ready and waiting and a coffee, paid promptly (minus the cake).

OH is a farrier and people sometimes give him something extra for the kids-a lovely thought and much appreciated but never expected. The most generous are often the less well off clients. The richest one we have doesn't even give him anything at Christmas. Christmas gifts are appreciated but again not expected.

I dont think there is a logic to my tipping but I do frequently tip people

tesco driver - yes I tip - maybe £3-4
postman - christmas only £20
vet - no I do not tip
edt - yes I tip £10
muck man removal - yes I tip £10
handyman - yes I tip £5
farmer - field maintenance? no I dont tip

Nope,he's above average price wise anyway which I don't mind as he's very good & very reliable,if a shoe is lost within 7 days of being put on it's put back foc after, 7 days I pay for for it. Never occurred to me to tip him as well!
