As title really. Do you ever question any of your vets advice or do you accept it totally? I trust my vet but sometimes I do ask for a more thorough explanation if I don't understand something or feel the advice is confusing. I guess that is just my nature, I need the know the why's and 'whatfors' of something. What about you?

I did (he has 25 years experience as a horse vet) until he told me to get rid of my mare as he felt she would never learn to pick her feet up, I cried loads as i trusted his judgement, but felt the horse was 100% in every way, so ignored him, and 2 months later she is an angel with her fronts, and getting there with her backs!!

Tajes time and patience, glad your getting there.

I don't trust anyone 100%. Everyone makes mistakes (me too) so I feel it's up to me to take any advice & then use my own judgement. I also know my horses better which is a consideration, eg one I will only box rest on extreme circumstances, the other is no problem but how's a vet to know that?

Agree with Nari- I collate all info and ask everything. I too dont trust anyone 100% and everyone has room for error.
I nearly had a puppy put down years ago on vet advice and spoke to someone with a lot of knowledge of the breed who disagreed. Anyway to cut a long story short she is still here 6 years later. Just my opinion.

I trust mine, but not to the extent where I wouldn't question some of their advice. After all, they are businesses, so when they want to xray over and over again they do have an incentive don't they £££££££

Yes of course otherwise I would not use them. But I trust them to do their best not to be infalible. Everyone makes mistakes and there can be more than one "right" way so I would have no problem with asking for a second opinion.

Yes I trust him, but I also have my own opinions and realise that he is a human and capable of mistakes like everyone else.

Merlin was written off by the vet three years ago, but is still in work and sound......

Now this was not a mistake as such, but an opinion which failed to come to fruition.... thankfully

No, he's great and trust most advice but it's more of a partnership as he will ask me for advice on how to handle the horses, I know them inside out and he knows his job inside out.

Plus I've had bad experiences in the past with other vets giving wrong diagnosis so I always remember they are only human and can always make mistakes.

I discuss my vets findings and advice with them, and usually relate it to humans, as I was an Intensive Care Nurse for many years. We tend to work together, and havent had any problems.
Thinking about it I have had more problems with doctors than vets, and trust the vet more thatn SOME docs my family have been treated by!

I trust generally that the vets I use will do their best but I do not trust that they will always be absolutely right. I question in a nice way all diagnosies and treatments. Having had a couple horses I have bought pass vettings (done by very well-respected vets) with serious problems unoticed has made me very sceptical.

Also I use a large practice and I don't get the same vet all the time. On my last yard which had a weekly clinic as it was so large we always got the relatively new vet doing all the routine stuff and initial exams. Just as you get to know them they move on.

I trust ours, we've had him for all the years I can remember and he knows us and our horses. He has horses himself as well which i think helps as, unlike some vets he is always calm and confident around them and I think that's why they never seem to get stressed by him.

In fact I was very pleased when he last came out to give oru horses their vaccs and chip a couple. He actually commented on how our horses were always so well behaved!

Praise indeed I feel coming from a vet who deals with tonnes of horses!

I do trust my vets, apart from one at the surgery who I will only get if genuine emergency. I wasn't convinced by his work at all, so if it can wait til the next day for another vet then I will.

The other vets there though have always been great in explaining things, in exhausting every possibility and of keeping me in the right balance of hopeful but not overly optimistic. There is one in particular now who I would try and get, the one who worked with Annie when she was PTS. He never made me feel pressurised to make any decision in any direction, was very thorough and calm when explaining everything that would happen and very professional. His behaviour through that has earnt my trust.

I'm not always convinced by the arguements that vets will always look for ways to make money. I've certainly never got that impression of the ones I've used (and in the case of the bad one almost the opposite, he couldn't wait to get off the yard). But I also do small things like having a stock of vet wrap, gamgee etc. there ready for them to use so they can't use that to add to my bill.

My vet has been my vet since he was a very Junior member of the practice (22 years ago). I trust him implicitly in terms of diagnosis - not least because he doesn't give a FIRM diagnosis unless he IS 100% sure. If there are a couple of possibilities, we discuss them and decide between us the options for further tests/or treatment of the symptoms.

He makes the odd mistake scanning - EVERYONE does because every mare is different. But even there he's never 100% definite - if he has a doubt abouta 14 day scan (which of course could be an 11-12 day scan with natural cover) he'll say -tease her for a couple of days -if she doesn't come in,we'll recheck.

Thankfully he's younger than I am - he's not ALLOWED to retire!

I don't trust anyone 100% but I do have faith that they are doing the best they can for my horses.

I would prefer it it one of them would listen to me about handling my yearling though..... when I say she's safer to be examined outside and they say no I want her in the stable, please don't blame me when she panics and tries to shake hands with you....still the subsequent completely calm acceptance of vaccination done in the yard on a loose lead proved my point rather lol!!

of course you should question your vet occasionally...100 percent trust is in my opinion a bad idea in any area.

At the end of the day the vet is only a well trained person working in an area they heve experience in ...they can and do make mistakes....everyone does...a degree doesnt stop a vet being a human

If you have doubts about something then ask a good vet will try to explain it better or more clearly... or admit they dont no exactly what is wrong but explain why the tests will help narrow it down...

As long as your polite about it i dont see any problems with questioning...
i know id like the person to ask rather than assume im getting it wrong!
or worse know im getting it wrong and dont correct me because they didnt want to insult.
For the sake of the animal do question things if you feel it nessecary!

Trust to treat as best they can is one thing.100 blind faith is different..and i dont think anyone deserves it.Everyone makes mistakes
