Do you turn out when you've lost a shoe?

Just wondering what other people do. Badger lost a shoe hunting on Saturday – Farrier is coming Thursday. I’ve been turning him out but he’s started to look a bit pottery this morning.. although don’t think he’d appreciate staying in all week either!

What do you do?

Depends on how the horse is...if the foot is ok and she`s not foot sore i do, if the foots a bit of a mess then i dont....

My last horse used to get really footsore if he lost a shoe so I used a boa horse boot on the foot to turn him out which stopped the foot breaking up too. They do look a bit cumbersome but the horse never seemed to mind having in on.

Always turn out, unless the horse is clearly dog lame trying to walk about grazing or coming to and from the field, I suppose it depends on the ground, for example our yard (where the stables are) the ground is quite stoney, so for some horses they would be rather footy walking across the yard, but fine once on the concrete or in the field, suppose you could always bob an equiboot (or similar type) on just while yo ur waiting for you farrier to come, cheap as chips and do the job, every tack box should have one.

Turn out. When we used to have a very long walk up to our field i would pad out the foot with cotton wool, wrap co-flex over the top and then cover in duct tape (didnt have a boot or anything similar) It always worked for us and stopped them being pottery over rough ground on the way out.

Mine stays in - mainly because she goes very lame very quickly, plus she doesn't like being out in winter anyway.

My farrier would never leave her without a shoe Saturday to Thursday thoguh, as he knows what shes like - very good feet, but we call her the Princess & the Pea with her feet. He'd probably ahve come out last thing Saturday or first thing Monday for her.

I would turn out if the shoe had come off cleanly. If it had damaged the hoof id leave him in. I have an equi-booty which come in very handy in these situations although not everyone has one to hand.

Turn out - mine are out all the time - my mare is footsore on hard ground with no shoe but ok when in the field and prefers to be out.

My lads just lived out for 5 days without one of his front shoes, you wouldn't have known he was missing one! Then again he has absolutely rock solid little feet, lost one out hunting before and i felt absolutely no difference in him, didn't realise until someone pointed it out to me!

Turn out unless there was something really unusual going on with the foot. If you're worried you could always put some gamgee and vet wrap and then duct tape it up to make a sort of a makeshift boot.

I'd chuck out too, unless it was hobbling in the field. Being footy on rough ground is a bit like us walking barefoot on a pebble beach to go for a swim in the sea. Its ouchy but worth it.
