mine are out 24/7.with no supplementary feeding at present.i dont use a vit block as it gets taken out of the container and eaten in chunks in 2 days flat if i try....
im reluctant to start bucket feeding until they drop some weight as all are fat.

do any of you who's ponies are also out 24/7 and not on supplementary feed not use a lick....

do you think i should try to find a way of getting extra vits and mins into them or should they be ok.

felix is 8.perdie is 18 months and harri 3 years.

Mine aren't out 24/7, but yes I would.
They soon get bored of eating it after the first few days, so although they will raid it, it ought to just be a phase & after a week they'll only go to it when they need it.

I would use one that's weather proof like horslyx & drill holes along the sides as it's eaten so water doesn't fill up.

I don't use feed licks, all mine get their amount off topspec balancer. Stud for the babies, comprehensive for the hunting lads and lite for the ponies. It's not feeding as such but getting them the goodness they need.
All mine have great hoofs, coats which shine that you can almost see your face in them and I never ever get mud fever. I strongly believe what you put into them you see on the outside. And that has always worked for me.
I won't have fat ponies, controlled grazing, muzzles and exercise is the way to go. I think there is nothing worse than fat horses and ponies

i cant exercise the adult as hes retired due to injury.
they are going onto a track system in the summer but are in the whole 3 acre field at present as i dont want to pen them into a smaller area and them trash it as its rented land.

All my paddocks have mineral/salt blocks in them.
The horses use them everyday, the big square ones last for months even when they are not in shelters.

That's understandable, everybodys suituation is different. I'm lucky as iv got good facilities but like my mate she has nothing and not allowed to lunge etc on her fields so her hands are tied at well.
It wasn't a direct comment to you :) x

M horses would eat a Dengie Paddock lick in a couple of days but this is because they contain molasses - they don't get them anymore. Have you tried a Rockies mineral lick, these aren't sweet so they just eat it when they need to.

If you don't want to use a lick you could use Nutri-bites which are fed in a snack like form and have all the vitamins and minerals your horse needs. They only need 4- 5 each and are very handy to feed.

iv tried getting the rockies ones but all our local feed merchants sell are the rockies salt blocks not min ones.
i might see if they've got any unmollased ones in but usually they only have the horsylx and other mollassed ones.last year i got a dengie huge round one.they didnt eat that fast but havent been able to get hold of one this year.
