do you use anything to catch your horse with ie carrot ?

Both of mine recognise my car coming up the drive and are usually waiting at the gate, sometimes I take a carrot with me but not often.

But isn't it a bugger when they are at the bottom of the largest field and you have to walk all the way down to them, when they then hightail it flat out back to the gate and then wait for you there with a "what took you so long" look in their eye!

nope. all mine come to call, at the mo are brought in, worked then put out again. Very occasionally I have an apple or something or take a handful of feed,but they don't see to expect it. Think they like being brought in and pampered!

nope, unless i'm feeling really kind!! Mine comes to the gate and almost puts his head in the headcollar (unless it's purple!! He will NOT put his head in it, if i have to be quick i don't realise which one i'm picking up!!!), he likes the attention!!

Something I found that never failed - even catching other people's horses for them - was the wrapping from a packet of fags. For some reason, horses curiosity always gets the better of them when they hear it crinkled.
However, as no-one seems to smoke fags anymore, you may have difficulty finding it!

when i first got him, he could sometimes be a bit awkward to catch so i have always taken a herbal treat thing down the field or a carrot
After reading this post this morning i thought id see what he'd do if i didnt have anything and Im pleased to say he stood there as usual and let me put the head collar on

He's never nippy so this isnt a problem.
He rarely actually walks over too me but will stand still and wait for me to come over. He must sense when i have a head collar even though i hide it behind my back as yesterday i just took him a few carrots to check him over rather than bringing him in as he was happy grazing and he came trotting over when he saw me!

I have to say, I always take a Herball when catching Grace

When I first took her on loan she was a bit of a bugger to catch. She wouldn't run off as such, just wander off when you got near to her so that we both ended up walking around the field, sometimes for 20 mins. I started taking a Herball in with me (the Hilton treats) and she just started coming to me and not being a problem, even if she had only been out for 5 mins (this week her poultice came off as soon as she went out so she needed to come in straight away and have it redone).

I don't always take a treat in with me, but more often than not I do... she gets it as soon as her head collar is on, and once she has eaten it does not bother me for another because she seems to know I only come with one. It certainly beats 20 mins to catch her, and should anything happen and I need to get her in urgently, I now know I can without a second thought.

At the moment I am taking a bucket with some feed in as madam decided to go back to her ways when we went on holiday. As soon as she is letting me catch her easily consistantly she will get a small handful of feed or a carrot or some polos

well ive just been up to bring him in for a ride,he was over the other side of our 12 acre field arrrrrr god it took me ages to walk over to get him lol lol
so he looked at me i had carrot hiding in pocket so there was nothing in my hand for him to see !!!
and.............. he just stood there for me to but headcollar
on lol little bugger i just think he was having an off day yesturday lol so its all good i suppose as ive only had him coming up 2 weeks he will get better then hopfully eventually come to me !!!!! lol i doubt it but you never know !!!!!

No, I expect my horse to be caught in the same way I expect him to stand still when tied, not to rush off when I TO, etc.

He occasionally gets an apple or something like that if i have one in the fruitbowl going soft, but it's not a regular thing. Luckily my pony is fab to catch.

Last horse had to be caught with a handful of mix, at 24 he was too old to change his habits lol!!

We find any piece of paper generally works. Great for getting their attention when taking a photo too!!
