Ive never weight taped mine before. But went to buy the wormers yesterday and was recommended to weight tape as most people (apparently) under estimate their horses weight, and then under estimate the amount of wormer.

Well I was a bit surprised. the heaviest of ours was my daughters 15.3 TB !!

She came in at 535kg My IDxTB mare at 15.2 came in at 525kg

My yearling, who i had guessed at 250kgs, actually measured in at 350kgs

Anyone else use them, and do you find them accurate ?

They are not supposed to be very accurate. I have a 16.2hh cob x tb who could do with loosing a little weight. According to the weigh tape she is 520kg!

It depends on the horse how accurate the tape is. My tape is very accurate on my mare - confirmed with a weigh bridge.

The other option is a formula girth x girth x length all divided by 11877 gives weight in kg (use cm for measurements)

I weigh tape my gelding twice a week to monitor any weight gain or loss but do not think that are that accurate in recording your horses actual weight.

I use a weight tape weekly. I dont know how accurate it is, but it does show loss and gains which is more important to me. If using it for monitoinr weight, you just have to make sure you measure at the same time of day, standing square on a flat surface and on the same part of the horse.

My boy tapes at about 380kg at the minute which i'd guess is about right.

I remember my old YO buying her first weight tape. She was mortified at how overweight the tape said her pride and joy of a cob was (she looked fine to me) when I asked why, she said the tape said her weight was correct of a 17.2hh horse! Bless her she had looked at the tape and the HH section rather than the KG section! I showed her how to use it properly and horse was about right.

Yup :) as others have said it's not the most accurate thing in the world but I find it's a usefull tool to keep an eye on my horses weight. I use it every couple of weeks to see if he's getting fatter or if he's loosing weight. I found it especially helpful after he had worms and had lost a bit of weight, I wormed and changed his feed and used the weigh tape to check his weight was going back up.

both of mine are pretty accurate on the weight tape - 17.3 mare was WT at 700kg - on the bridge she was 710kg....
id always slightly overdose on wormer than underdose - that way you can be sure

I've always assumed both mares are in and around 550kg mark, so wasnt far out with them.

More surprised with the yearling, shes clearly picked up more of her mums bone than i thought.

I was spot on with the 2 YO. I will use it as a monitor over the summer. When it eventually arrives

Thanks

They are really useful to monitor changes in weight - but as a one off to get an accurate weight for worming they are +/- 20% easily.

We regularly 'weigh' ours with a tape, 3 very different builds. The tape isn't accurate for any of them but it does allow us to monitor weight loss/gain.

Thats reassuring. It had my rising 4 YO gelding as 500kg, only 20kgs heavier than his half sister. Hes got double the amount of bone.

I use it to monitor weight gain/loss.....I know when the look the right weight, feel ribs and see a shimmer when moving, and weigh them, what comes up is where I keep them on the tape.

I weigh tape every 2 weeks as I am working on putting weight on one horse. Not sure how accurately is as he has never been on a weigh bridge but at least it helps me know that he is gaining weight relative to his starting weight when I began with the same tape.
