Apologies for the boring poll! but i am interested how many people vaccinate their horses, i have friends that do and friends that don't, some friends only vaccinate if competing...
i personally do, even if my horse doesn't leave the farm, am i wasting my money??
Tried to think of a few options, bound to have missed loads out, sorry..
 
my horses have never had vacinations as far as i kno, to be honest i've never been told that they need them. i may well get slated on here for saying this but its true. the yard where i started my horsyness none of the horses were given regular vacinations as far as i kno. never really thought bout it really :S
 
Tetanus is VERY important,it is a terrible thing and can be prevented.Every horse should have a course and they can probably stop when older as I think they become immune if you have so many.People should also have them if they are around horses.
Flu I have because of competing and rules but I think my horse has a problem with dust allergy because I started his injections as soon as he was old enough. A lot of people I know now realise that is what caused their horses problems and I would just have tetanus when young and start flu a bit older
 
Mine are all given a tet jab the day after birth, which coupled with the mares having their boosters in February should see the foals 'covered' for their early months. I'll then have their first of the course of three done a fortnight before weaning. It's very rare I sell as foals but if the first two jabs are done I know I've done my bit to safeguard their health and it's surprising how many youngsters knock themselves when playing; at least if they're done, it's one less thing to panic about! I've known four breeders local to me lose foals with tetanus because they had not had their jab after birth; it's just not worth the risk, it's a deadly disease; why run the risk of losing something you've been working for for the sake of £20?
 
Always have, always will. It's never caused me a problem.
I've seen a couple of horses suffer Tenanus infections. Both died, one rather horribly because the owners went into denial & one not quite so horribly because the owners had it PTS when it was obvious that there was nothing that could be done.
Out of interest how many people on here have actually seen a horse with equine influenza? As I've said on here before I think if people realised what a terrible debilitating & potentially fatal disease it is they'd be keener on vacinating.

All well and good in theory - however chance of being vaccinated against the strain of flu going around is very limited

Both human and horse vaccines don't offer that much protection, as the influenza virus rapidly mutates meaning that the vaccine will not stop horse or human from being infected.

Tetnus is a no brainer, but I have only flu vaccinated for competition. However I have a isolated yard and the horses only meet strangers competing, so there wasn't any value in vaccinating before.
 
Well I suppose it's the same as with human vacination -even if it's not the same strain the symptoms are lessened & the animal has a better chance of a full & quick recovery. I just take the stance that in the event of an outbreak I've done everything in my power to safeguard my horses. In the event of that not being enough at least my conscience would be clear. I've got six horses so it's not a cheap option but I reckon it's worth it.
 
Apart from tetanus I never bothered with flu in the UK. The one time I did my horse went into shock and was dreadfully ill.

Here there are loads of vaccinations for various things available, mine just have tetanus, rabies and west nile virus, all of which are essential. generally fatal consequences if horses contract these here.
 
All mine are vaccinated against tetanus - it is a horrible disease that petrifies the life out of me. The competing ones are vaccinated against flu.
 
I always vaccinate against Tetanus & Flu, both are terrible diseases. How anyone can consider not vaccinating against Tetanus when it is so easily to contract beggars belief!

I do Tetanus and Flu always because i compete. I would never take the risk and not vaccinate because like Toby_Zaphod says they are horrible diseases.
 
all mine are vaccinated for tetanus. if they are going to be eventing, they're fluvac'd ready for that, but otherwise, as i have a quiet yard and no visiting horses, it is only tetanus. i will follow my vet's recommendations for EHV vaccs etc when i start competing again.
 
vacc for tet and flu, my friend recently lost her horse to tetanus because she wanted to save some money, need i say anymore.. she learnt the hard way and is still paying off the vet bill 4 grand as her insurance company wouldnt pay up due to no vacc, tis in the small print, not such a good saving afterall
 
I do not believe that people don’t vaccinate against Tet!!! Good god horses are so vulnerable because of their environment & it is not even a yearly injection. I like another poster have seen a horse with this disease, when I was a teenager. His owner did not believe in injections, so when he suffered a puncture wound to his foot of all places he was treated with natural remedies. I was there when the knackerman arrived to put him down. That poor horse knew, he could smell the death on that vehicle as he stood at the bottom waiting for the metal bolt. His dead body was then winched up, his death was preventable & needless. There is no excuse not to vaccinate not when they are so at risk & the booster need only be done every 3/5yrs. Shame on you uneducated/selfish owners!!
