Question in title really

Horse is 10 years old and has not been vacinated for 5 years. (I have only owned him since May when he was given to me

)

Previous owner never vaccinated.
Most people on my yard do not vaccinate, and the one horse that was vaccinated against flu got it. Some vaccinate religiously though.

To be honest I thought nothing of it until I renued my insurance policy and there is an exclusion stating they will not pay out for any disease he has caught if he could have been vaccinated against it. In other words some parts of my insurance are void without a vaccination.

Also how much does it generally cost to vaccinate, i presume i will have to start from the beginning so will it cost alot more than normal?

Thanks

You'd have to start again. The initial course is 3 vaccinations; the first two are 4-6 weeks apart and then the third one is approx 6 months later, then it's annual boosters.
My vet charges £21.72 for the vaccine and £8.94 to stick the needle in the neck (bargain!) + visit fee and all + VAT of course. The initial vaccine is the same price as a booster but obviously it looks more expensive as there are 3 of them

Just had pony vaccinated and including call out cost £47.00 that was the annual one though not the 3 to start it off.
My old mare hadnt been vaccinated before i got her and she was 16.
We have all our three vaccinated up to date.

you will need to be up to date with Vac's if you plan to show though as most places will refuse entry if not vac's not up to date.
mine have just been done & it cost £35 per jab (so x 3) but i drove him to the vets for it as the call out charge where i was using was more than the jabs per time (callout was £53 last time!!)

Thanks everyone, there are others on the yard vaccinating this month so I will try and book him in.

It was just that many people at the yard have told me its pointless! I dont show although would like to do some fun rides etc this year so it will be worth doing

I never used to vaccinate (talking 20 odd years ago) when I had my pony at a large livery yard/riding school.

Virtually the whole yard went down with flu one year & it was horrid to see them so ill. My vets bill was horrendous, it was around £200 back then, so I would always vaccinate as it's well worth it. Also, although I've never seen a horse with Tetanus, I believe it's an awful death & just so needless.

Although I've never been asked for proof of vaccination, you will need to show it in some cases, even for pony club camp.

i believe everyone should at least vaccinate against tetanus if not flu. it is a horrible horrible thing for a horse to die of (there have been 3 recently in my area) and is so easy to vaccinate against. surely it is only doing the responsible thing?

My boy is just about to have his 3rd jab for the starting course. Both flu and tet have cost me about £25 together each time and I don't have to pay the visit fee as I do it on a day when the visit is free

So if your vet does that too, defo take advantage

agree with some other posts - should always vaccinate against tetanus - but I dont have the flu jabs for the older horses who dont travel to shows any more anyway. And we have our own small yard at home - so not as if it is like a livery yards with lots of different horses coming and going. But our competition horses are vaccinated as they need to be to compete.

on a slightly different subject, I havent had my cats vaccinated since they were kittens - they have an enclosed gaden and never meet other cats, and I dont put them into kennels if we go away, so it does seem rather a waste of money to have them jabbed - and stressful for them travelling to the vets.

Mine are all vaccinated against flu and tetanus and I would not have it any other way.

Death from tetanus is horrific and horses can get tetanus from a tiny wound.

If my animal died from a condition that is perfectly preventable with a simple vaccine I would not forgive myself.

I religously vaccinate, I cant think why you wouldn't.
It's not alot of money and is only once a year, my pony wasn't vacinated when I got her and I started her put her on the vacination programme at the vetting!

As Booboos says - tetanus is an awful death and totally avoidable if vaccinated against. Mine are all fully vacinnated, even the little ponies who never go anywhere. Can't believe people don't vaccinate. It is pricey to start of the course from the beginning but if you want to compete - you need to anyway.

Definitely do tetanus and if you want to compete/do fun rides etc where your horse would be exposed to other horses I would also to flu.

If you do any offical riding club qualifier competitions you must have up-to-date vaccinations.

I always vaccinate, tetanus in particular is an awful way to go.

Ditto this, ours are all vaccinated without fail. I do too much competing to even contemplate not having it done.

I have no idea how much vaccination would cost you, sorry.

I vaccinate against Tetanus, Rabies and WNV, all particularly nasty and usually fatal. I don't bother with anything else because the horses don't compete, but my Vet tells me I could have about 8 other vaccinations done if I so wished, Strangles and Flu amongst them.
