Do u wave thanks to cars if they slow down for you when your riding on the roads? I always do but everytime i go past others riders they never wave this does not look good for us as riders because next time that driver may not slow down for another rider. I just think if people said thank you more often drivers would'nt mind slowing down for us.

I always give a wave of thanks to cars that make some effort to be considerate. I try to ignore cars that make no effort at all.

I do if safe to, otherwise I will nod my head, mouth 'thankyou' and smile. Most of the time I can take my hands off the reins but sometimes I need a bit of control.

Yes I do, and trot out of the way if I'm on a bend/wave them on etc.

There is a riding school near my mums house - their fields are a good half mile away and they have 1 girl leading 3 or 4 horses!!

If you get behind them you basically have to wait till they got to the field and it really pisses local people off and doesn't give us horsey folk a good name.

They have got loose on several occasions and galloped up to the main road! Crazy!!!!

Some people don't wave because they need both hands on the reins! I do agree that a polite nod is a good idea although you can feel like a nodding dog if you are on a busy road.

I have a sign on the back of my cart that says "Please pass wide and slow THANK YOU!" which has the desired effect... prehaps the people who print riding tabards will come up with a polite one rather than the command "Slow" that you see on them.

I always always always either raise a hand or give a nod and a smile. Even if it's sarcastic! There's never any excuse for drivers to be stupid then, and if I have eye contact with the driver I will smile and mouth "thank you". I don't think horse riders can expect drivers to be polite if they are less than polite themselves, and I HATE the guy down the road from work who never ever thanks anyone (but shouts if you go too fast) - I am often seen stopping, winding my window down and yelling at him when I drive past him. Idiot.

Yep, whenever I can I do (obviously if they have slowed down, not if they speed past). There are certain circumstances where I don't think it would be sensible to take my hand off the reins, if that happens I do try and acknowledge them in some way

Yes I always wave a thanks, if I couldn't for some reason I'd make it plain I was thankful by a nod or a smile.
Riders who dont say thank you in any way shape or form make a bad example and make drivers less likely to bother next time.

90% of the time yes, but if for some reason I can't take my hands of the reins I would nod and smile.

Same as me. I even wave to the little kids in the cars how sit waving at me, puts a Little smile on their faces.

Unless people have really naughty/bad in traffic horses, the only time I'm thinking you can't take your hands of the rains is for say, a tractor/lorry - in which case they should be slow enough to make eye contact and smile/nod/thanks. I think thats fine, it's if people make no effort its annoying.

Mmm, this seems to be a trend! I always wave thank you to cars etc, but, when I slow down for riders, get blanked, you can see why riders get a bad name

Yep, exactly the same.

I cant stand ignorant riders and tbh there are loads of them round here, unfortunately.

Yes, always, unless, as others have said, it's a 'both hands on the reins' moment then I nod.

I also always try to smile (which is sometimes more of a gritted teeth look depending on what's going on) and say thank you.

Drives me up the wall passing people on horses who don't even have the courtesy to nod when you've slowed down.

I glad you agree with me that its really important to thanks. People that dont wave give us bad name and are selfish. I hack out my youngster and do my best to say thanks in whatever way possible.

Yes I know who you mean!! Usually to be seen with a dog all over the place too, and his horses aren't always that great in traffic. Makes me mad. I ALWAYS say thank you, because it costs nothing and is always appreciated (by me as well as the driver, I tend to make a horrid mess when splattered over a windscreen)

This really bugs me too. I always thank drivers with a wave or a nod with a smile! I even thank the ones that go too fast- by glaring at them with a sarcastic wave and a smile! Not that it does any good!

It drives me mad when i pass a horse and rider on the road who just looks at me blankly when i slow down - especially when they are not wearing Hi Viz!!

QR - I put my hand up to thank all drivers (even ones who haven't made much of an effort), if I can't raise my hand, I smile and nod thanks.........manners cost nothing in my book.

I always thank drivers and if something scarey is coming towards me I ask them to slow down and smile at them, and 99.9% of the time they do. Really irritates me when people don't thank me when I am driving, as I go out of my way to be friendly out hacking as I think people appreciate it and it sets a good example.

My mare is a bit of a loop when hacked out alone so I rarely take my hands off the reins although I always smile and nod

I almost always wave and a big cheesy grin to accompany it too. I'm actually beginning to find that the drivers round here now slow down for me. Perhaps I am beginning to be recognised as one of the nice ladies who always says thank you. Very important when you have to share road space with as many HGVs and tractors as I have to...

Yes always thank drivers who don't actually make me fear for my right leg! (hoping that the message gets through) I do wish other riders locally would all do the same. I have been horrified at some of the behaviour of some members of our riding club. This was so bad that my sister drafted a protocol for safe riding in groups. The number who turned up without Hi-Viz, took up the whole road and thanked no-one was really quite scary.

Wave, smile, nod head, say thanks - as many things as I can do at the same time without falling off! Really appreciate people who slow down or stop and want to look as grateful as possible, especially the nice farmers around here who switch off tractors for you to pass even though my fellow has no problem with machinery.

Our finest hour was passing a group of council who were patching the roads with a noisy machine full of smelly tar. They all stood back and smirked waiting for the rodeo to start and my brave boy just walked calmly past. I smiled my sickliest smile at them!

The worst offenders on my road are L plate drivers - the more L plates they have the faster they are going.

I wave or nod at all the considerate drivers...I also wave at the inconsiderate ones, but not usually in the same way

Yesterday, I watched a ride of about eight horses and riders from the local riding school, clatter down the main street of the village, with a huge queue of cars behind, which they neither seemed to see, or acknowledge. I consider that to be equally as ignorant and inconsiderate as the loony old men and mums in people carriers that regularly try to assassinate us and our horses.

I always thank drivers by either waving or nodding and grinning at them
grin.gif
If they speed past I shake my head at them in a disapproving manner..

It really irritates me when riders don't thank people, as like everyone says, it gives us a bad name. However, I remember once I was riding through a busy village - I was thanking EVERYONE!!! which was quite a task - then my horse got a horsefly on him and started being daft, so I was looking for it and was just slapping his neck to kill it, when a driver yelled out of his window 'A THANKYOU WOULDN'T HURT!'
mad.gif
Sometimes it's not always possible to thank everyone!
