I always wear my riding hat and would never dream of getting on a horse with out it and it has been same at yards i have been at before. At my new yard though i have noticed many people don't wear their hat when riding and it shocks me. Some of these people are beginners to, like yesterday a young girl went riding with her pony with her mum helping her but she didnt wear a hat and she got bucked of. Why would anyone put themselves in that sort of danger?

I have never not worn a hat, our yard is VERY strict on hats. You would be chucked off the yard is they found you riding hatless on their land. It is ridiculous that beginners would consider it!!!

I find it really shocking! There is one man with a 17hh horse who is a beginner and he went off on the road with his horse with no hat on!!!!!

Always, even bringing in and out and sometimes in the stable - got knocked backwards against a wall by over-friendly but clumsy horse on the yard and was never so glad to be wearing it.
I get a total ribbing when I go to the States, but hey, it's a brain, I can't replace that!

A woman at a local show recently got a real roasting over the tannoy for sitting on a horse without one.

Yeah I always wear a hat, horses are too unpredictable not to. Plus I wouldn't feel right without it when onboard!

Tell you what does really annoy me and also suprise me....

We have a YO who just sits in her car most the days and doesn't do anything really, she doesn't even help the kids out. I would of thought she would have put her foot down and said something about wearing hats as a serious accident is waiting to happen.

First time i have ever seen a YO not want to look after her yard.

I have ridden without them in the past but do feel a little precarious!!! Don't wear them around the stables though as head would get too sweaty!

Hats don't seem to be available if you ride abroad sometimes, well only in developed countries.

I'm not even allowed on our marathon carriage without one now... which is rather annoying but we're sponsored by poly hats so we have nice new light hats.

I definatly wouldn't ride without one, no matter how sweaty i get but in a weird oxymoron i'll quite happily gallop across country bouncing on the back step of a carriage without one!

YES - my skull is like an eggshell and Doctors have told me I dont need another major concussion till im at least 30!

I have ridden with out them in the past on old PC Dobbins, and recently rode my youngster after a friend had been schooling him - he was so good in fairness but certainly something didnt feel right, Dressage I wear a beagler (slaps wrist!) and otherwise its an enormous mushroom crashcap for everything else.

I remember when I was in NZ the boys used to break in 3yr old Polo ponies in baseball-caps or at most a polo helmut, and used to take mickey out of me in my skullcap stating I looked like someone in a circus who gets blasted out of a cannon.

Id rather look like an idiot than be an idiot with out one and end up a hospitalised vegetable - in a sport as dangerous as ours - whats the point in trying to look "cool" and evade trying to be as safe as poss?

I feel naked without one

How old was the young girl riding without one? If she was under 16 then she (and presumably her mother) was breaking the law...

Some people call riding without a hat stupid - these days I prefer to call it natural selection...

A yard owner will be held responsible and liable for any accident that occurs on their yard if they firstly do not ensure that everyone on their property wears a hat when mounting riding or schooling a horse (in some cases even when leading them and when bringing them in or out).

Yard owners should have a written rule within the contract that everyone should have prior to bringing their horse on to the yard and countersign a copy of it that is returned to yard owner. They also need to be seen to enforce it.

Yard owners have a responsibility for anyone on their yard including members of the public.

Did anyone see countryfile yesterday on t.v.?

Never without - used to work in A/E and seen too many splattered skulls to not....however, when I was young (many many years ago) I remember not wearing one quite often, used to get chased down the road by my mum shouting at me to get my hat on!!! Now I would never dream of letting my daughter ride without one, or get on board without wearing one myself. At girl at our yard got clocked on the head whilst in the stable, whilst ducking under her norses neck ( I know, but we all do it) and ended up in ITU having had fluid drained off her brain...

I always ride with a hat and body protector, I feel vulnerable without. Like driving a car without a seat belt.

Insurance will not pay out if a hat is not worn I do not think.

have never ridden without a hat. Never wear one around the yard (have been known to keep it on after riding if its very very cold!!). Don't normally wear a body protector when riding except for cross country (I have to) and hunting (through choice)

Yes - only one exception I can think of in the past 6 years and that was on a super trustworthy animal on grass for all of two minutes. However, when I was a child it was not unusual to ride without.

What does get toe me is myneighbours and her child.

Child comes out in hat and body protector and pony is kitted out in boots front and rear and she rides on grass for a half an hour, finishing up with some jumps. Then child gets off pony, takes off boots and saddle, takes off her hat and body protector and jumps back on the pony and carries on jumping. WTF?

Apart from very occasionally bringing the 28 year old pony in from the field bareback, then yes!

I don't want brain damage, and I certainly don't want my family to have to look after me if I caused it by not wearing something as simple as a hat!

I fell off yesterday, on my own whilst cantering on a hack. I landed on my head. The horse went over too so I had no chance. I stood up straight away then had to sit back down as black spots started appearing in front of my eyes. I had a headache for the rest of the day and can't quite remember some of what happened. Imagine if I hadn't had a hat on!!

(PS Horse is fine and dandy!)

I actually ride with out a hat occasionally. Most people i know don't ride with a hat. Before last year, i hat never sat on a horse without one. But i only rarely ride my horse with out a hat. I would never go hacking or jumping or anything like that with out protection.

apart from very very occassionally jumping on my girlie to ride a few strides bareback to her stable then always always always!

Ive never ridden without a hat- ever! (Apart from the above)

The girl is no older than 10!

Having worked on a neuro unit and witnessed serious head injuries and the years of rehabilitation that follows such injuries, I always wear a hat and would advise others to do so as well, it looks cool to wear a baseball cap when your schooling, but dribbling and incontinence is not so cool!

Always ride with a hat.

Yes I admit there has been occassions where I have nipped someone elses horse in the menage if showing somone quickly but still that is non excuseable I should not of done so.

I made a promise to myself not to do that anymore...which I've stuck to and will do.

You only have to fall and bang your head on the ground a few times before you think to yourself THANK GOD I had my hat on! ...until these people do that...only then will they start to always where a hat.

Anyone who rides without an approved hat strapped on is a dead man walking in my opinion.
