I've decided to try contact lenses after breaking a 3rd pair of glasses in as many months! I either squash them in a pocket or a horse manages to knock them off my face. So, I wantred to ask if any other forum members have taken the contact lens route - my opticial was concerned about dirt and dust around horses - which does make some sense but I daresay I would take them out for clipping etc.

I wear glasses most of the time but do occasionally wear contacts.

I find contacts great for rain (otherwise i cant see!)

I used to have gas-permeable (semi-soft) contact lenses and I did have quite problem with grit under the lens, especially when grooming muddy horses! I now have soft lenses and have had no problems in that respect at all.

I passed out when I tried contacts ages ago and have never tried them since much to my optician's relief! I have glasses made of shatterproof stuff and also wear a tie thing on them if I ride so they don't fall off completely (else I'd never find them again!) I also wear a hunting cap with a peak so that helps when it's raining but I'd rather see through the spots than just see a sea of colour!!

I wear Toric monthly disposable soft contacts for riding and they are great! the hard contacts are HELL if you get anything at all in your eye, but I can hardly tell I'm wearing these.
I used to wear glasses for riding, but after having them mashed into my face, and being unable to see in the rain (and then having them fog up in the car!) I've given up.

I dont wear glasses but my friend does. She cant wear contacts so always wears glasses and does everything in them, including a full days hunt!!!

I wear soft lenses and don't have any more probs with them around the horses than in any other environment, such as work. I find them pretty comfortable and I like the "all round vision" that you get - my eyesight is poor and in my glasses (for mucking out in the morning) I don't have good vision at the sides and above and below my glasses. Certainly wouldn't like to ride in glasses!

I use Acuvue monthly contact lenses and have had no problems with them riding or doing any horsey jobs. As mentioned earlier I dont like riding in glasses as you dont get all round vision - although I use my glasses for early morning mucking out when I cant bear to put my contacts in!!

I wear contact lenses - from he moment I get up in the morning til I go to bed. I have the high water content one's. I do everything with them in (including swimming with goggles on) and have had no problem with contacts around horses. Been wearing them for over 10years now as well!

I wear soft, monthly disposable lenses all the time with no problems. Excellent for riding, even in a dusty indoor arena. I wear them for swimming too - something that's frowned upon by opticians for hygiene reasons. The only comment an optician made about mine a few years ago was that they appeared to be going rusty! And did I use the train a lot?

Right enough this was when I was a daily rail commuter lol How perceptive of him.

Go for them - no more steamy glasses or watering eyes from when you peel onions.

I wear glasses round the yard but contacts to ride. Ideally I'd wear contacts all the time at the yard but I can't tolerate them for longer than a couple of hours max. I use daily disposables as they are the only type I don't have a bad reaction to & they are handy at the yard because I don't need to worry about solutions & containers.

I don't like to ride in glasses as I worry about the damage they could do in a fall.

I wear soft disposables for riding - although I have ridden in glasses and an elastic strap which is OK.
Muck out in glasses - agree that it's too early in the morning to put lenses in. Our young horse is pretty gentle and I have no worries about handling her in glasses.
However, I'm very short sighted and couldn't go near our big old show hunter in glasses as he's a total oik! If he knocked my glasses off he'd put his great foot on them before I got chance to find them!
If you've got sensitive eyes that get irritated by lenses, my advice is to do everything in glasses and just put the lenses in (with clean fingers!) at the last minute before you get aboard. Unless your horse is an oik of course, in which case you've got no choice!

I usually wear contact lenses, especially around horses

I hardly cant tell I have'em, looove my contacts

Almost never have problems, but if you want to, bring some lens solution to stable so you can wash them if tou get dust in the eyes. But that never happens to me

Go for it!!

That's really spooky - I used to wear hard lenses and found them absolute hell - especially when riding, so much so that I gave up on them altogether. Now wear soft toric lenses and the only problem I've ever had was when a fly decided to commit suicide by lodging itself between the contact lens and my eye

I've worn soft contacts for over 20 years now. I did used to wear glasses for everything - I'm absolutely bat eyed without them and would be hard pressed to find the horse!

*What horse?*

I don't have any problems at all

I'm a totally lazy oik with them - I have monthly replacements and wear them 24/7. I'm supposed to have 1 night without each week whilst they have a deep soak, but I tend to forget. Yep, I know............my corneas are in perfect condition though

My little boy wears glasses for riding and they've survived falls that his bones haven't (if you get my meaning!).

A girl I know has presciption goggles for XC and hunting and she swears by them. Hubby wears glasses and has had one XC fall where glasses were pushed onto his nose and was badly cut. No damage to his eyes or anything luckily. He can't wear contacts.

i have been wearing soft contacts for nearly a month now after wering glasses for everything....seriolsy go for them and perservere if u have any problems! i wouldnt want to ride in glasses again now or wear them at all if i could help it, they are so easy once u get going and u forget ur wearing them!

I've worn contacts for 17 years! I'm as blind as a bat - so blind in fact that I get free eye tests - and hate wearing glasses.

The only time I ever wear my specs is five minutes before I go to bed and the five minutes when I get up in the morning. My contacts are the soft daily disposable ones and I've never had a problem with them in any conditions. Occasionally I might get a bit of grit in my eye but its only as painful as if any none contact lense wearing person got grit in their eye.

I wear contact's (hardly ever wear my glasses)

I've never had any problems with dust etc, though I do occasionaly wear goggles for clipping.

I wear my glasses most of the time.

Touch wood i havent broken a pair yet! I dont take them off though!

I do wear contacts occasionally, and i do find they are better, dont get in the way etc.

I have never had a problem with dust etc with my contacts in, i always compete in my contacts because i look like an alien in glasses and a hat!!

I just go without glasses, and have blurry vision! Eyesight isn't THAT bad though, I hardly wear my glasses as it is anyway to be honest.
