Hello all. I was wondering, how many of you do wear hi viz clothing when hacking? Because I am no fashion diva, but I dont (although I do try to ensure I dont wear dark clothing... ) and TBH when I'm driving around, I see a fraction of riders actually wearing it. So who does and who doesn't?

I'm sure I will get it in the ear from those hi-viz-honeys who go out in all of the gear, but it is a personal choice so please don't burn me down in flames (SHOCK I also ride in a beagler and dont wear a hat when schooling a more reliable horse...!!!) I am just wondering the % of who does and doesnt and if it is representative of the riders I see out and about. Or are we all (other than me!!!!) saints on here?!?!

I am not one to be decked out in Hi Viz but always wear a tabbard when hacking out or leading my horse on a public road. Always thought better to be seen than not and if i ever had the unfortunate experience of falling off on the moors then the rescue helicopter could spot me!

Horse wears a Hi Viz exercise sheet in winter when light is lower but nothing in summer. He is bright orange which is lovely and clashing! :)

Yes, I have a very fetching pink exercise sheet for the deepest depths of winter... but other than that I guess I am the only HHO sinner!!!

Yes, min of hat cover, jacket, rug, hi viz leg bands/boots, neck band / bridle pieces on breastplate - in all weathers

As for fashion / younger people not wearing it everybody on our yard under 40 wears it, over 40 only one does - my mum.

I voted "Yes - I'm a high-viz-hunk ;)
Always wear at least one piece, even if I'm not on the roads. When on the roads I deck myself out in tabbard, hat band, tail guard, bridle band, wrist bands, stirrup reflectors.
Would love to get more, but as i'm always riding horses of different sizes, it's pointless buying exercise sheets, boots, etc etc.

I wouldnt normally wear it, maybe a hi viz band around my hat when hacking.

However, if it is raining and a dull dark day, I will wear a bright Hiviz bomber jacket and the HiViz hat band around my arm so the cars can see my hand signals.

I have my fluorescent yellow Toll Ride Hat Band, a tabard and Jasper wears a hi-viz martingale when we are out hacking.
I personally don't think this is quite enough on the main road we sometimes use and I am about to invest in a mesh exercise sheet with a large tail flap so we are more visible from behind. This will also be of benefit if he decides he would like to go anywhere without me! :D

No.

But, I don't have roads I need to go on to hack out, it's all round our fields or bridleways, minus one private road which only cars from us go down :)

Back on my old yard hoeever, I always wore a tabard hacking as was situated next the A14 and was a very 'town' close livery yard.

We have more than 3000 acres of off-road hacking, so I don't wear it as a general rule. But I do put it on if I'm hacking in the evening as it's getting dark, just in case any estate traffic is about; and also if I'm going out onto a public road.

Well I learned to ride in the days of drab hacking jackets and cork beaglers but I feel that I have a responsibility to my horse and other road users to make sure that we can be seen from as far away as possible. So I wear a hat-band, jacket or tabard with boots on the horse, always and sometimes an exercise sheet but don't use that if the weather is too hot/windy. I have had gloves but find that they are not very hard-wearing. I am also looking for a very visible schooling whip to hold out into the road so that drivers know to give us plenty of room. I wonder why some people think that accidents only happen in the dark/rain?

Well I commend all of you hi-viz-honeys (and hunks!!). I do however think there must be a few more sinners lurking out there somewhere becuase I rarely see this many riders wearing hi-viz... do you? I am lucky that most of my riding is off road and on the lanes around me I rarely see more than 3 cars in an hrs hack... maybe I need to re-evaluate my own attire though...

Only a vest but I always wear that even if I'm planning on going off road.

I've had the experience of getting locked out and having to go a long way round via the road as it was getting dark and if on the bridleways and farm it helps tractors, combines, other riders, cyclist and dog walkers see me and react if necessary.

Should add both me and the horse are usually dark brown and black in coat or clothing.

When I was lucky enough to have 5000 acres of off road hacking behind the livery yard, I still wore high viz, as my thoughts were, if I fell off I would be more visible in undergrowth for potential rescuers to see - if there was a helicopter or something needed as well, I would stand out more. It isn't just about traffic spotting you...

Yep, always. :)

When you've seen a horse laying on a road with a broken leg waiting to be shot, a rider in the back of an ambulance, you tend to realise how important hi-viz is.

But do you REALLY think a yellow tabbard would have prevented something so catastrophic??

I dont if I'm not going on road (and I only go on road when I have company)
If I'm going on a road I have a hi-viz tabard. And I do own a bright pink exercise sheet but can only use that when its cold.
So I'm not really a hi-viz honey, with one piece of hi-viz lol.

the only time i wear hi viz, is when i go out on the roads, as the yard im at is over 1000 acres of off road hacking so i dont need to use it as the only vehicles that go around are the tractors from the park, yes if im riding late at night i will wear it to be seen, but not if i dont have to. However everytime i go off the park then i have at least a hi viz tabbard on

During the summer I only have a hi-viz tabbard with reflective stips on but in the winter I do an excellent impression of the mitchelin man all togged up in my enormous hig viz coat that lights up like blackpool illumiations! :D

I always wear a tabard if I'm going on the road but as we have a fair amount of off road hacking, I don't wear hi viz for that.

In the winter - yes, every time I ride.

Not so much in the summer - but now that the nights are drawing in will start.

I find the results interesting. (currently saying 80% do wear it)
Last weekend I passed 9 horses on the roads. Only 1 had any form of hi viz. This was a 60mph road, it was raining and very poor visibility.
On our yard there are 31 horses. I have only ever known 3 people to wear hi-viz of any kind.
A total contradiction to your results. Maybe if you belong to H+H forum you are more likely to wear hi-viz :)
Me? I was the one wearing hi-viz last weekend .....check out my halo :D

:D always wear hi viz tabard, whatever the weather as it still helps to make you more visible in the sunlight, also my horse wears white boots(at least they start off white) i have to say that i am in the minority in my area but i feel that i am helping to protect my horse from the drivers who are perhaps not paying attention, and it may slow them down a bit.....who cares what we look like as long as the horse is safe!!!!!!
