Sorry I had to delete this the first time because it wouldn't let people vote immediately. So here goes for the second time! A lot of my friends here in Yorkshire don't do paid work but, back in Leicestershire where I used to live, most of them did work. I am interested to know how many people have paid jobs/don't have paid jobs and the reasons why they have made these choices. Please choose ONE answer only. Thanks!

I am a student and with my timetable it is quite hard to get jobs! But in the summer i plan to get a job, i feel like a spoilt child as at the age of 20 I have yet to have a part time job, but i am fortuanate that my parents although are not rich (money is spent on the horse) can help me out at uni with money so that i can concentrate on my studies and having a good time

I'm in my final year of uni at the moment but as soon as I leave I will be working full time to support my expensive habit! aka ponios!

I have to work to feed my horse! Have worked since I was 17, including when I was at Uni, both my parents worked, as did my grandparents. My aunts&uncles all work, as does my brother and all my friends! I would love to spend my days with nothing to do but look after my horse and lounge around but OH would have to earn at least 50K for that too happen! Oh well, there's always the hope of a lottery win.

Both my OH and I work full time. We don't have kids and we are both quite ambitious in terms of our careers and like to be able to afford to do/have what we do so no reason for one of us not to work.

Would be lovely to be able to play ponies all day every day but sadly if we just had his salary we would have to lead a far more frugal lifestyle!

Things might change when we have kids but not until then.

Work full time in a job I enjoy. But if they introduce a flexi work policy I would like to work a 9 day fortnight so that I can spend more time with my horsie

With my course its near impossible to have a job once you reach 2nd/3rd year. From day 1 wev had approx 30hours a week of lectures, now its built up to even more. Add to that days on the farm and the fact that the majority of "holidays" you are expected to be doing seeing practice. There really isnt much left. This year though I have got flexible work riding at a small stud - unfortunatly it takes approx an hour to cycle out there and an hour home so it isnt really feasible and will probably have to give it up in the next month or so.
I always work the summers though - but due to clinical practice this is the last year that I will hvae a chance to work. 26weeks experience doesnt fit into my holidays too well!

I'm a student at uni at the moment, training to be a primary school teacher, but I also work part time, anything up to 25 hours a week. I can't have a nice laid-back student lifestyle unfortunately as I have to pay for the horse myself and I'm also buying a house with my boyfriend at the moment, so will have a mortgage to pay too soon!! I'm always poor and never have a minutes rest but I wouldn't have it any other way.

O/h & I both work f/t (or did until I was made redundant) & we both put a lot of effort into scratching up the career ladder so that we can afford the enormous mortage which is required for house with field & stables, we can afford for me to have a good horse & compete BD / BSJA & run the lorry. Also all the extras eg lessons, etc.

But we never go on hol & buy Tesco's value stuff & never have new clothes unless the old ones are physically falling apart. If we had a 'normal' house and no horses, I could stay at home, & die of boredom.

I work full time and so does my partner. Would like to reduce my hours so I could spend more time with the horse but cant see it happening in the near future unfortunately.

I'm a maths teacher (I know!) and also own a pony trekking center in Wales. Would love to work with the trekking full time, but simply can't afford to - it is only seasonal work and does not make a huge amount of money. It covers it's costs and the costs of my horse, and my family's horses. Wish Wish Wish to win the lottery and spend all day every day doing horsey things. Love holidays though

I suppose I should state my own position really since I am the one being curious about everyone else! I am a self-employed web site owner. OH has a good job and I don't actually have to work but I choose to because, like catembi, I would be bored rigid if I didn't have a job. Also, like dannykins, I prefer to be busy, busy, busy. I think I would slide into a depression if I didn't have a million and one tasks to accomplish every day.

I work PT - but thats only because I needed the job at the time. Now I love my job, and I dont want to leave - so Im looking for another PT job to fill the gap - otherwise I'll have to get a FT soon to support the Murph!

I work full time, I have since the day I left school after a levels. I have never been out of work despite being made redundant on one occasion and started my part time job as soon as I was old enough.

I enjoy working and also do it for the challenge and money.

Would love shorter hours in the summer so I could enjoy the weather riding though!

After being a civil servant, onion picker, fish skinner, shop assistant , groom etc etc, I started my own business. I have my own yard and land (rented) and keep retired horses. I can fall downstairs in the morning and play with them all day and every day

.I dont have time to ride my own horse or go away on holiday as normal people do, nor can I stay in bed with the flu. Its not all roses although I wouldnt change it for the world. Mairi.

lucky bugger!

Me and OH work full time and are reasonably well paid but still never seam to have enough money so I don't know how people cope who don't work full time. Well younger people anyway.

I think I'm a good girl becasue I had part time jobs form being 14 all the way till end of uni when i got a full time job.

don't think I could bring myself to go on the dole, even if I really needed it.

I could have ticked yes to three

Do not work for ...children.....
helath reasons (anxiety attacks)
and...OH prefers me not to

I do "work" though! Work very hard tbh...just no money in it!

I was in paid employment from the age of 12 to 26, I had to give up work when I was 5 months preg as I was so ill
frown.gif
Then I got preg again LOL. Did some work for a PR company when the boys were 1 & 2 for about 7 months, which resulted in a huge fall out with the owner (she accused me of stealing money - I was doing the accounts
blush.gif
It was actually the official accountant that was doing the pilfering) and that left me with a VERY sour taste in my mouth

However, I must start bringing SOMETHING in to the household at some point.

btw...wanted to add to my post

I wanted to add that even though OH 'prefers" I not work
it would hardly matter much as I would do it anyhow.

I have always (until the birth of my second child) worked a full time job. I started work at age 14 and only stopped when I was 26. Even after 26 I have always tried to earn by providing in home daycare (never again! lol ) ......buying and selling tack....etc
I have been dealing with terrible anxiety attacks though and the thought of going out into the public work force right now is a bit scary to me until my condition settles down a bit.

When it beagn severly when I was 24 I found work that moved around my problem.

It was a horrible time in my life though as I prior to that had an amazing job making very good money. I was supporting my daughter on my own and had the world by the tail!
I worked as a manager in a large retail department store and loved my job. I just kept moving up and my future seemed very bright then.
All of the sudden though my anxiety attacks began and I found it hard to even deal with the customers and workers at this time. I was pretty much having them constanlty and just wanted to hide in my house.

I have come very far since then, but the thought of ever going back to that place seems far away.

It actually really makes me sad at times even though I am so busy, happy, and content taking care of my children, animals, and house

thought I would elaborate...felt like spilling my guts today
wink.gif

work full time, we both do, - don't have any choice with the size of our bloomin mortgage & I earn more than OH...having said that I love my job no matter how frustrating it can be at times but not sure what we'll do if & when we decide to start a family

Jade, I'm sorry to hear about your health problems. It must take courage to talk about it. You sound as though you are making good progress though which must be a relief.

Weezy and everyone whose OH prefers them not to work. I think my OH would secretly prefer this too but I just need to work. I bet you fill your days with horses, looking after the children etc though and can't imagine when you would find time to actually commute to a paid job? I know I felt like that when I was on maternity leave.

As for Tia, I think you probably work full time and then some!!

I work in the benefits section of the local council, not hugely excting but I have flexi which is a Godsend to me. Not sure I could work somewhere that didn't have it.

I choose not to work because I'm a lazy mare and fortunate enough that we can afford for me to be so.

I earn what used to be called Pin Money making customised sashes, but that's more of a hobby and pays for the horses.

Considering I don't work, I don't know where the time goes though. There always seems to be something to be done. Somedays when the weather is grotty I do spend a lot of time on here, other days I'm out by 7.30am after Evie has got on the bus and come in for a coffee to find it's gone 1 and wonder where the hours have gone.

I make work for myself too, all winter I've been glaring at a section of post and rail fencing which was wonky and really annoying me, today, because it's lovely and sunny (and snowy) I spent hours ripping rails off and nailing them back up to my satisfaction.

I've done the lady of leisure bit when I had a small child and was stuck in married quarters, it was mind numbingly boring.
