This is wierd....I don't understand what difference it makes if they know your name? :/ to be fair though, my dad had always told me never to speak to strangers so I didn't. Surely this applies to most children?
And I have to say we got team hoodies last year at PC with names on one side of the chest....and its really really annoying!! At 17 having people trying to read your name..there...all the time is slightly disconcerting lol
I think it looks quite tacky most of the time, but I doubt it constitutes a serious safety risk. Strangers can pick up a childs name from any number of places if they choose to (from friends/parents shouting it out even if ALL written sources were eliminated).
Someone knowing your name is only a risk if you are inclined to trust that any adult who know it can teach you what to do. Wierd men can talk to children regardless of whether they know their names, and a child that is old enough to go out on their own really ought to have been taught enough about the risks that they dont go beyond polite conversation with someone just because that someone happens to know their name.
The vast majority of child abductors know their victims first anyway, so I think there are far more useful steps people could be taking to protect their children (perhaps one of them being putting them out there in named gear all the time so they clearly get the message that someone knowing your name doesnt mean they are safe)!
I think its a good point well made, some people will use anything to gain access to or abuse kids, so anything that keeps them a little safer - is surely only a good thing??
While im on a horse whats this man going to do anyway?
Pull you off your horse and abduct you?? Good grief, where are your parents? Maybe direct them to this thread and see what they think.
This is why you should wear your hi-viz florescent tabbard. Covers any information perfectly and is much safer in more ways than one![]()
