what should she do.

I prefer them docked....but only half, like my gal, she had the tip nipped off and tbh she would look a fool with it any longer

ETS: Buy it anyone, sod anyone who gives a damn

Not their fricking dog

She won't get into trouble for buying a docked dog, she just won't be able to enter it in a KC event such as agility, flyball, obedience etc.

It is legal to dock if you can prove that your puppies are from a working strain and get a letter from your vet.

I've got two JRTs, one docked, one not. TBH I've had more comments about the undocked one, about how they look 'funny' with tails. I've got no strong objection to docking if they are workers, but I can't see why a pet dog should lose its tail.

People ask about Star's tail (pointer) as she is a young dog. I think she was just when they were aloud to be docked.

I'd just buy it if I was her. It's hardly a major thing anyway.

I reckon they should be docked, because the whole point of a jrt is to be a working terrier. These dogs need their tails docked to work.

If we don't need jack russells anymore then maybe we don't need to worry about their tails.

Let's just have pretty puppies with long dangly tails as prwitty pets.

Its not illegal aslong as its a worker and done by a vet. You get a cert of off the hunt or head keeper. Another riduculous law, they cry three times as much having their hind dew claws removed and its still legal to castrate cattle with no pain killer and dock lambs and ring them too.... So clearly not a law made on welfare grounds.

My JRT has a tail. I don`t disagree with docking for working dogs though, don`t see why a pet dog (which my JR is) needs to be docked, although Spud does drive himself daft chasing his lol

I guess the main thing is you should dock at 3-5 days, at that point in time the breeder doesn't know if JRT will be a worker or a pet, so better to dock as if it is a pet and is docked then not a problem but if its a worker and has a tail then you have problems.

The letter is for your vet, it has to come from a head keeper (or similar) or an MFH (or similar) signed and then the vet will dock either using scissors or a band.

She won't get hassle for it, LOL!! JRT's have been docked for WAAAY longer than they have been left long. No-one would even think about saying anything I wouldn't have thought.

I knew there was something to do with a letter!!!! LOL

We're not bothering any more as it affects us showing. I'd never dock a puppy that was older than 4 days because the cartilidge is starting to turn to bone. I watched my 2nd litter of JRs being done and they made no fuss, no noise and it was ever so quick.

Thanks every one for your replies vet nurse has a young spaniel with a docked tail and she has had hassle from people in the street saying about her dogs tail, friend is concerned that when out walking with her children that she may get confronted will show her these replies. thanks again for the replies.

Yeah, ive suggested that she has walk round her area and to see if any one has a young docked dog and ask them if they have any problems has it might be just in the area the nurse lives.

Lol, well you weren't wrong. Yes I know, thats what I don't understand, I've never hardly seen them even yelp or bothered by it. My pups screamed blue murder at having their hind dew claws snipped off. Also at 3 days the nervous system isn't as sensitive.

My friend lives in South Glos and has had a few snide comments about her Boxer's docked tail.

I often have to explain to offended people that Bostons have natural bob-tails (and docking is still legal in the US).

I have a litter of jrt at the moment.I have not docked their tails as it is illeagal now unless you can prove that they are from working stock.
so i have been informed you either have to be a land owner, hold a shotgun licence or be a gamekeeper.
Then each puppy has to be microchipped and be given a certificate which is all done by your vet which works out about £50 - £60 each puppy.
then who wants to pay extra money for a jrt as they are not kc reg unless they are a parson jack russell which are slightly longer legged.
must admit though they still look cute with their little tails on.
the ban came into effect at the beginning of april this year.

I've got an undocked JRT pup - when I was looking they were all docked and only her breeder was against it. People comment on her undocked status but never heard anyone tell me people have a go at theirs if it's docked.

I wasn't overly worried about getting one that was docked it just happened she was the cutest! Love her waggly tail now tho', It wags her whole body.

we get more comments form people about our un-docked boxer than about our docked one! i am glad they are not being docked anymroe because they haven't been working dogs for decades and so i see no reason to mutilate them. i do agree with the comment about still being allowed to do dew claws, castrate calves etc though - they always scream more with the dew claws than the tails and castrating without anaesthetic has gotta be really painful.

Really? When did this happen? Is it true for all breeds?

April this year - it's now illegal for any dog to be docked unless it can be proved it is going to a working home. The kennel club have banned the showing of docked dogs born after april 2007.

We have a cocker spaniel with a long tail. Our previous cockers all had docked tails. People seem to comment on her tail rather than the lack of it.

The biggest difference I have noticed is how they wag their tails. Without a tail they wag their whole bum and with a tail it is just their tail. I much prefer a cocker with a tail TBH.

Interestingly, a friend of mine many years ago had proper working cockers (her dad was a farmer) and they had tails but alot less feather they also looked alot different...
