They can be legally docked if it can be proved they are going to be used as working dogs

If you aren't showing them (I take it they are not Parsons) it shouldn't be an issue.
Which reminds me, looked through the list of applications for docking in a friend's copy of the Kennel Gazetter the other day - there are a hell of a lot of boxers suffering tail injuries. And has anyone else ever seen a working Kerry Blue Terrier?

Ummmm.... pass on that I'm afraid! My ex-BF just produced a shotgun certificate for his proof that his cockers were going to work (none of them did of course
) and the vet docked them all...
it does seem to be more a matter of finding a vet prepared to do it now, and he/she will tell you what evidence they will accept

Well ratting is still legal at the moment (until someone decides rats need protecting
), and you can't beat a good russell for that. Not quite sure if you could still use this as a legitimate reason for docking - maybe to stop the rats biting the terriers tail

Agree with all of the above and suggest you just ring your vets and ask them what they require to dock your pups

I know several working JRTs and their tails are fine undocked as theyve got some hair coverage (and provide their owner something extra to grab hold of when they have to be pulled from a rabbit hole
). My vet will dock puppies with very little evidence required if the dog is a type to sustain tail injuries like spaniels and pointers. He did say he is less keen on docking breeds that have 'padding' on their tails though.

I always thought that JRT's tails should be docked the width of a man's hand for that very reason

Our vet will dock puppies, at a cost of £35 a puppy and you have to sign to say you will also have everyone micro chipped with them, so if you've got a litter of say 10, you're looking at a nice bill (think this is suppose to put you off)
I've got a rescue springer thats just coming into his first working season, he's un-docked, but would like to have it done. They would like to see 'evidence' of the tail being damaged before considering it.

That was what I was told by an old terrier man too, only it was fox earths not rabbit holes .

I need to come to your Vets, our Practice got a new Vet and she is not willing to do anything to his tail. Luckily with all this dry weather we've had it's not been too bad recently.

Actually the microchipping is a legal requirement of having the pups tails docked, every docked puppy needs to be legally identified with a chip and certified. And I believe it does have to be the same vet who does both chippng and docking. Also the owner/breeder must before the dog is 12 weeks old make steps to ensure the dogs are to be sold and trained as working dogs. I believe you cannot advertise them as pets.....
