hi,

im thinking of putting my 13.3hh good-doer new forest pony on dodson and horrell ers pellets. he really needs more energy and i like the look of how low in starch and high in oil it is. does anyone have any experiences with it? also i currently have him on blue chip native balancer with really helps his condition/topline, so do i keep him on that aswell?

thank you!

Is it a recent change or he is laid back normally? One of mine has been horizontal most of his 22 years and the only thing that worked was instant energy mix and red cell. I was working him hard and had him fit for the drifts.

He always seems to need a boost at change of coat time, kossolian blood salts help.

What sort of condition score is he at the moment? If he is overweight it might be this that is making him sluggish and feeding him more will only make the problem worse.

My native good doer has been on restricted grass and nothing more than a handful of chaff with minerals all summer and despite this is still 10% of his body weight over weight (220kg rather than ideal 200kg and condition score 4 rather than 3) and has been a bit sluggish of late. Though I think the fact he is growing his winter coat in fast and so is feeling the heat a bit is not helping.

Maybe try clipping if you've not already done so? Consider weight loss if necessary? Unless I was able to work my good doer native very hard I'd not be feeding him anything with any significant number of calories in it, weight control is a constant battle as it is!

hi,

thank you for answering.

Peregrine, he's normally laid back
Alibi, he's pretty good right now, he could be slimmer but he's def. not overweight, but he has a very strict diet. clipping makes no difference.

thinking about an energy supplement rather than feed to minimise weight gain but I've been warned off iron based supplements as i know overfeeding iron can be toxic.
have emailed spillers who were no use, also emailed dodson and horrell - hoping they come up with something!
