Does anyone use these. Our TB has had tye up sessions, currently on Outshine, speedibeet & Alfalfa. Recently changed vets and they have suggested using ERS, however, it has 7% starch, Outshine has none. Since on O/shine has hasnt tyed up.
However apparently the ERS supports the muscles etc.

I do. I started buying them because they were recommended by a vet as my mare seemed to be reacting to cereals. She has been on them a couple of years now and as soon as she went on them she started filling out - she had always been poor before - she is the black and white cob in my sig. She also seemed to get a temperment change, going from being nervy and joggy al the time to still having plenty of energy, but much more chilled out hacking and in the stable.

A friend whose mare has a histroy of tying up also uses them and her mare hasn't tied up since - don't know if coincidence or the feed, but fingers crossed it continues!

Yes I use them as well. Excellent feed. Gen does Elem BD and has a pretty heavy work load. He is very sensitive to feeds but needs the energy. Since being on these (8 months now) he has developed better muscles condition, hasnt had any gut/skin problems and has lots of sustainable energy but no 'silliness'.

This is interesting....my mare has just suffered a really severe bout of tying up (CK levels were 77,000 when it happened, as opposed to the 'normal' 400 odd).
After reading this, I think I may try them too!

what worried me was that it says they are for performance horses and I was concerned they may give him more energy, which, being an ex racer he doesnt need. However, as the vet has written papers on tying up I suppose he knows what he is recommending but TBH I get so scared of changing his feed as we have had so many problems until we found Outshine.

I know what you mean, has taken me months to get Gen's sorted and I wont deviate at all from what he gets now.

Personally if you are finding the other feed is working ok I wouldnt change.

The energy it provides isnt like the 'instant' effect you get with more oat/barley based feeds. I think I am right in saying it is from the oil that the energy comes from and this is digested differently and the energy is released into the system at a sort of measured dose. This means there is sparkle without steam. Certainly Gen who is a terrible stress head has not had any of the adverse effects he has suffered from other energy feeds.

Think it is the feed they are used to suggesting for horses that tye up. We were having a general discussion about him and when I said about what had happened they suggested it.
I have learnt so much about starch and its consequences since I got this horse LOL

I only hack and do pleasure rides, so not really performance, we also have very limited turnout in winter and Marnie is really chilled even on this routine.
