can help a horse who will lean but when realises she cannot get away from me like that, throws her head up and runs forward? having SJ stopping problems!
xx
A waterford mouthpiece might help with the leaning but not sure about how it would help with a head throwing! Maybe if it had gag cheekpieces! Sorry if im not helping!
Yup, a running martingale was top of my list! Please note that Tia is VERY sensitive mouthed and I am not in the know of bits etc but she is currently in a loose ring lozenge bit and goes well but just a bit too fast!
Thanks

Waterfords are nice because they dont have a nutcracker action at all. My horse actually is less strong the less you have in his mouth, he is nicest in a nathe.....but try the universal cheeks either with the mouthpiece you use or the waterford, and perhaps a curb strap to distribute the pressure....
I'm just having a rootle as I'm at camp in a week or so and I am fed up of taking about 1/2 a mile to stop! Thankyou very much Kat! I'll introduce the martingale and if no improvement, will try a waterford too!
Thanks once again

standing martingale would help IMO you may only need it a few times just so she gets the idea throwing her head up is not an option, much better than "bitting up!"
Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna hurl aload of metal in her mouth just for the sake of it but at the moment I am pulling and pulling on her loose ring and would far rather be able to gently squeeze and have control in something slightly stronger
Thankyou everyone for your suggestions!

My horse is ridden in a three ring gag with a snaffle mouth, hes not strong but hes a big horse and i would rather have a stronger bit than haul him in the mouth. He used to throw his head all over the place but he wore a running martingale for a month or so and it has completely stopped now, he doesnt need to wear it anymore!
JJ used to have one of them. Made him throw his head about more and he ran away from it, he was worse in that than in a snaffle!! Also rubbed and gave him sores on the sides of his mouth. Hate the things!

Running martingale and sensitive mouths do not make for a good team! I echo bbmat some people dont like them, ( for the life of me I dont why) but a standing martingale is a far better option than a running one. I would try a Waterford or a cherry roller bit as they have nothing to grab and lean on, also KK correction bits are good for some sensitive horses but at first they feel a bit 'dead' in the mouth!

Aha I had one of those on Sunday, must of looked an absolute tit, so Came home and decided to try his highness in my double bridle and lo and behold it is and absolute sensation, I havent jumped in it yet, but he stopped perfectly after our gallop yesterday as is really soft in his mouth and much softer in his outline because his jaw is relaxed!
Dont know how I am gonna manage XC with 2 reins but it has to be easier than pulling for england!
BTW In running martingale he nearly went over backwards.

I jump my horse in an elasticated standing and a loop ring snaffle. He hates running martingales as they act on the reins and therefore his mouth. IMO and my super dooper trainers opinion its the best combination for him. Dunno where all the bad press about standings comes from though, its annoying .
A running should only come in effect over and above the point of control. Make sure you adjust it so when the horse is relaxed the rings will reach upto its gullet under their jaw. i dont like martingales full stop, but they do have their place in some cases.
I'd use a waterford with a hanging cheek to apply poll pressure and an elasticated standing martingale. I would maybe try a running martingale and see how I got on - it depends how sensitive the horse is and if action on his mouth makes him throw his head up even more. Good luck
