does a horses name really matter..i think it does

My daughters 1st pony was called Bullett, when we sold him the new owner changed his name straight away, does'nt really matter to me what a horse is called if it is the right horse, I now have a Pirate and a Boe, both suited to their names.

The name is usually one of the first things i ask if it isnt stated in the advert-i think it sometimes reveals some cahracter about them/ makes me visualise shouting for them in the field etc.
I dont think i'd change a name unless, like others have said, the horse didnt know his name already-one of my mums current horses was given the name Cyd by a dealer for about a week and it just didnt suit him so we called him Hugo which suits him alot better!
If they did know their name i wouldnt change it even if i didnt like it- i think it'd confused them a bit. I rarely actually use my horses real name-he gets referred to with a few nicknames- at the moment Turkleton is the most used!

My current horse was introduced to me as 'Louie', but when I went to pay for him/pick him up, his passport name was 'Lucifer'. When I asked the breeder why, he sheepishly admitted that he was a complete git as a youngster, but assured me that he had grown out of any naughtiness.....

Hmmmm....I adore 'Louie' and have had him for over a yr now, but he does have a very athletic buck that he likes to use to express himself!! Having said that I would buy him again, and have had enormous fun on him, and have developed a far securer seat than I ever thought possible.

Interestingly, I ride another horse called 'Jack', who is as genuine and honest as his name, but because of this don't find him half as entertaining to ride!!

So yes I do think names can be relevant.

when i posted this question i didnt mean i wouldnt buy a horse that i liked if it had a daft name....its just i like to know what they are called as it gives me a feel for the horse.......i find a horse can know its name without you even thinking it does...

Depends on the name - if it was something like gnasher or buckaroo then that might put me off! But on the whole, no, a name wouldn't stop me from ringing up about or trying a horse. If it really didn't suit it then I'm sure we'd think of a nickname sooner or later - wouldn't change it completely though.

at the rs i used to be at one of the dealers the school regularly had horses from used to call all their mares Mary and all their geldings George needless to say they were all changed on arrival at the yard or we would have had multiple horses with the same name!

I'm sure that mine think their names mean "food" as I only call them when I feed them or I'm going to catch them and I normally have a treat for them.

I don't think they are bothered what I call them.
