Does any one have 2 ponies sharing a stable?

At the moment my 2 little ones (a shetland and an exmoor) share a stable that has been split into two with a ply board wall between them. Thing is recently the shetland has taken to going in with the exmoor and standing behind him, as if its a comfort to him. When i first went to see the exmoor he shared a stable with the shetland, but decided to split the stable as i didnt know how they would behave. These two have been together since the shetland was a year old, now 4 yrs old, and was thinking of taking the wall down so they are sharing again. They get on well, have moments in the field playing around but never see them actually fighting. So i was wondering if anyone else does this, how the ponies get on, what did you /have done to make sure they are happy and not fighting etc and do you think its something that i could do? Was planning to do it at the weekend, so if anything goes wrong i can shift one to the spare stable, until the wall can go back up. If anyone has any pics of thier ponies sharing that would be cool.

Oh just to add the stable is 14x12, so they have plenty of space.

Yes, my daughters first ponies would share, they were 12.2 and 12.3. Where I work now, the standard shetland and section A share a field shelter which is about 12x12 (part of a barn) and share a stable if they come in. No problems whatsoever. And it looks so very sweet although I know that is not what it is all about.

I would say give it a go. They sound like they are good friends, and its a nice big stable for the two of them.

I know of a little section A and a donkey that share a stable, they are best friends and don't think theres ever been a problem.

My two shared everything (until one was pts), stables, field, wherever. I also used to volunteer at a rescue centre and most of the little ones were stabled in pairs. Tbh I think it's healthier and happier for most horses/ponies, unless they really don't get on!

l have a section b and a donkey who share a stable
they are very happy together...... feeding is done separatly as pony very greedy and wants donks tea too .

im sure they will be fine together ,just do it while your around and then you can watch there reactions .

My 2yold WB shares the foaling box with the little NF foal that was bought at the Beaulieu Road sales last autumn. It's not through choice but because their field has been underwater since November. They did share the field before we stabled them.

Ruby is about 15.2 and the little one is about 9 hands! They share a feed bucket - they do get one each but tend to munch together, and I've seen Ruby nicking hay that the foalie had dangling from her mouth. The foal did go through the sale at 4 months old though so she thinks Ruby is her new mum and Ruby seems happy with the deal. Guess the fun will come when we need to 'wean' them.

My friends Highland and her shetland share a stable together. They are both fine allthough the highland does bully the little one a bit a feed times. As long as you have plenty of space for the two of them they should be fine.

Our exmoor gelding and dartmoor mare shared a stable, they normally lived out and were very happy in together.

My TB mare also shared her stable for a while with a welsh A gelding as there was no stable available for him and they were best of friends. They were happy to share the hay and Breeze would stand back and let her little mate have a good share of her dinner at night too.

As long as the stable is big enough and they are happy to share space and food, I can't see a problem and often think that they are probably happier being in with another good friend.

my 10 & 11 hand welshies share a stable no problems in fact the only issues are if you seperate them they have a 8x10 & are more than happy together, they also have roam of a small yard area but have been shut in on 3 occations now due to severe weather.

My two shetlands share a stable. They hate to be separated so when one is on box rest the other has to go in with him. They play and chase each other round the field but dont fight.

I have to put them both in with the big one if I end up shutting the stable door because of bad weather, that stable isnt a pretty sight in the morning and takes a bit of mucking out

two of my weanlings share a stable & are happy do so. They usually eat out of the same feed bucket & haynet before moving onto the next one.
Over xmas we also had an extra horse but not enough stables so i paired up my 14.1 & 15.3 in a big stable. They were happy enough in together as they have known each other for almost 6yrs. They did however have to be fed seperately as they argued!

where i work we have a 11.2 and 12.2 that share with no problems when they come in, they're both geldings and get on well together

My 3 guys share a 18' x 30' barn, but they do have access to the yard outside too if they get fed up with each other. They seem quite happy though!

ETA I keep them unshod in the winter in case they stand on each other though!

When they come in, I have a 32", 40" and a 13h QH wearling that all share a stable, usually the goat puts himself in with them as well. No problems at all. (11 x 20" stall)

Also, have a pair of mares, 14h arabian and a 15h QH who share the same size stall quite happily if I have run out of space and have to double up.

My friends keeps a shetland and a 12.2hh together, they get on great with each other and she has never had any problems

I know a family who have a 13hh and a 14.1hh in one large 16x14 stable. workes brilliantly, they put out 2 piles of hay and 2 water buckets and feed on tied up on the yard and the other in the stable. seems to be good for them as they're old fashioned brick stables with no way for small pony to see his neighbours otherwise.

and the little shetland now shares during the day with a 17.2 TB so he get's around a fair bit.

2 rescue Shetland ponies are now owned one by me, one by another lady at the same yard. Both share a stable even though Molly is a 16yr old mare and Donut is a 3 yr old (unrelated) gelding. They adore each other and the only real issue is that at brekkers time they have a habit of swapping bowls! Not good if they have different feed requirements, little buggers!

I keep my 4 TBs and shetland together in a section of the fold yard. They've got cows on one side and sheep on the other and they are very happy. They have a ring feeder in the middle and they all get fed in the same spo every night. They are all very contented - no fighting or bickering and they are completely de-sensitised to cows and sheep now as well.

I'm hoping to have a 13.3 fell pony and a Shetland sharing a normal sized stable. All depending on if they get on well enough etc

I keep my 10hh and 14hh donkeys plus welsh yearling filly in a 12x24 stable all together. I take filly out for feeds as she has different requirements to donkeys and they try and pinch her dinner but they all get on really well.

My stable is 20x16 & is shared by 2 horses (one 15 hands & one 15.2) I do put temporary barriers up though (plastic ones from the electricity board, with a lunge line above it). I do this as one has ad lib hay but the other one is restricted & has hers in a small holed hay net, so they are separated to stop any disputes.
They have 10x16 each, it works well & I only have to rent one stable.

freinds got two little ones here, they was rescued few years ago from dartmore think there was 150 rounded up for meat [zoo] they are as happy as larry ! they have been together all along no probs at all ! they was on local news listning to the archers in there stable , little celebs lol .

Yup.... Have 3, but only 2 stables. Usual routine is geldings in at night, mare in by day. However I have had all 3 in at once overnight during these storms we've been having this winter. 13hh and 14.1hh in a 12x12 box; not ideal but fine for a stormy night and they are both saints and get on incredibly well together.

My 2 fells share a stable on the rare occasions that they come in. I just make sure they have 3-4 separate haynets/piles to prevent arguments, but most of the time they eat from the same net anyway. They also have a good deep large bed so there is enough space for them to lie down together or for one to move around while the other is lying down.

I have a double stable (24 x 12- two 12x12 stables with doors) with some of the central partition taken out (so it provides an escape route for a trapped horse if necessary), the doors are kept open and the horses can use the stables as they wish-we have had up to three (15.2, 15 and 16.1) ) horses sharing, but currently have two sharing (15 and 16.1)- I find that when they stand in them, they will both stand in the same side, but when they lie down, they choose a side each, although I have on occasion also seen two, or even three, lying down in the same side!!!

We have 5 horses and only 4 stables, one of which is a huge foaling box, so we put my mum's two ponies in there together. One is 14.2hh New Forest and the other is a 13.1hh Exmoor and they get along brilliantly and often sleep bunched up together in one corner. We never have any problems with them and they always look so happy together in there!
