My two Shetland's share a stable and would both go in with my 16'2hh mare if we needed to shut the top door if the weather was really bad as she would worry if on her own. The two Shetlands always eat out of the same bucket even if you give them one each!

Just out of interest - do any of you that do this have any separation issues with the two sharing?
When I had two I was very careful to have them out in different herds, and not do too much with them together so they didn't get clingy...?

Yes, they were ridiculous. But I would just ride away and shut my ears to the indignant yelling of the 'abandoned' one, poor thing!

I was worried when the mare had to be PTS, I made sure the gelding was in the field next to her and watched it. He cantered around the body for a bit, playing almost and nudging her.

It was heart breaking.

But after a few minutes he just walked off and grazed. Never ever called for her, so he definitely knew.
He was PTS a year later and they are buried next to each other in their favourite field :)

ETA they got seperate graves though - they'd shared for long enough, bless them! I still miss them - I can see where they are from the window here as I type. Both before their time, v sad :(

It's not an issue for my 2, they are turned out in a herd of 13 & have their own separate friends who they hang out with during the day

When me and the bay pony are at home my three have access to three stables. Bay pony and my Connie both choose to cram themselves into the smallest stable (10x12) to lie down in. They have access to an 18x12 stable too, but the visibility from that one isn't so great.

They're best friends, although when shut in a stable together the bay pony harasses the Connie something chronic, when the doors open and there's space to get away from each other they're fine. In term time they do live apart without any trouble, bay pony never bats an eyelid when he comes back to uni, but the Connie shouts a bit for the first few days. Neither of them are particularly fussed about the old guy and don't share with him.

If they get separated frequently to be ridden the one being left gets used to it. Bizarrely, the one they get most concerned about leaving is the old guy as it's such a strange thing to happen and otherwise they don't care for him much.

Edited to add: Just found this video of them on a separate occasion...
