I am using Biotin at the minute and have been doing for a month or so does anybody know when I should start to notice a difference in the hardness of his feet? and also does anybody have any other ideas to help his feet in the meantime? Thanks x

I think you are going to get a lot of 'yesses' to this question! Mine has been on Farriers Formula fo a year and it did nothing. Now on Formul 4 Feet and Kevin Bacon's hoof dressing and we are making progres. Whatever you try, give it some time to have an effect before swapping to the next option as it obviously takes some time for the new improved hoof to grow down. Biotin is as good as anything as a starting point but would suggest a topical dressing as well. Cornucrescine is great as well but I have been warned that if you slap it on every day you will get plenty of hoof growth, but not necessarily quality growth.

My horse is half TB but she has rubbish feet too! Mostly only in the summer, when she is stabled in the winter they are much better - but seeing as it takes months for the wall to grow (and her walls hardly seem to grow at all) you can see what is affecting her feet.

As her feet don't grow and I hardly do any road work I am lucky that her shoes last for ages therefore helping by not having so many nail holes to weaken them further (she never loses a shoe - very good farrier!)

I feed Bailey's lo cal balancer which really helps and paint on Effol every day. But I think Biotin is the way to go really and I am sure you will start to see an improvement in a another month or so.

Yes mine was shocking - she use to have to have racing plates as her feet couldn't take the weight of normal shoes.

I use to make sure the area round her water bucket in the firld was always wet in the summer. Jelly is ment to be really good - but she wouldn't eat it. She was on farriers formula for years. Kertax hoof dressing is amazing.

But believe it or not the best thing I ever did was take her shoes off (she pulled a tendon as so had a decent amount of time off). And when she did come back into work I managed to just have front shoes put on her- something I'd never thought possible.

Good luck

Another vote for Formula 4 Feet!!

With any hoof product, it normally takes about 8 months before you see a noticeable difference.

Well I noticed absolutely nothing with any hoof supplement, and I tried loads. Eventually a farrier recommended Eucalyptus and Iodoform as a brush on to kill any fungal infections in the hoof wall and that worked. Apparantly lots of hoof cracking flaking is due to fungal infections so no matter what you feed if you have the fungal infection your horses feet will continue to crack up. Have just started using it on my TB's feet as they have cracked badly- probably due to the soaking and drying this summer and it has taken me weeks to get some of the eucalyptus and Iodoform. I started last week and already they are starting to look less flaky. Farrier coming in a couple of weeks so will see how much better.

A previous horse I had could not keep shoes on for longer than 2 weeks, her feet were a mess, we fed her everything over a 6 month period and it was hopeless - all that was happening was our money was going. 2 months on the Eucalyptus and Iodoform she was sorted, shoes stayed on for 7 weeks plus and when i sold her a year later the vet who was doing the vetting actually commented on her fantastic feet!!!

my TBs both have bad feet in this weather. We have had more than a few shoes thrown or shoes twisted and stood on (luckily only minor concequences) my saving grace however....Keratex!! I put this on twice a week and their feet are fab - even with all this rain!! I am usually all for hollistics and feeding from the inside but the farrier suggested it and its worked wonders. My horses are shod every 5 weeks and have been struggling to hold onto the shoes for that long but this time round they are on solid at the 5 week mark!! Best £26 I have spent in ages!! lol

I haven't bothered with feed supplements, just shoeing every 4 weeks with quarter clips and NAF hoof moist daily. Noticed a huge improvement, very quickly.

well mine usually has really good feet, it has just been this pants weather that has caused a problem. saying that, she is the only tb on the yard and everyone else is fine.
i am watching these posts with interest as i am going to put her on something for feet from now on.

I was told vegetable oil was a good thing to rub into his feet as well as giving it to him in his feed (minus rapeseed oil) which by the way does anybody know where they seel that as im struggling)
