Pastern lameness, stress laminitis or leg joint infection. Old horse i used to share just died from a combination of these and im trying to work out what happened.

My Shettie had stress lammi. He was companion to my horse and when he was left while I rode apparently he raced round and round the 6 acre field. After over a year he got laminitis and the vet said it was caused by physical (when the ground was hard) and emotional stress.
Perhaps the other things your old share horse suffered from were caused by running around also?
So sorry for your loss, hun.

I have a mare who if she moves yards will suffer from stress laminitis after a month or so of having moved, weve only moved her twice, she got it both times, vets were puzzled first time but it made sense second time.

She lives at my sisters so all being well hopefully will never move house again.

Probably going to need some more information to get any reasonable answers. A joint infection (pastern joint in this case maybe) is extremely serious in horses as it will cause permanent severe lameness. In mature horses this almost exclusively happens as the result of a penetrating wound, although this can sometimes be undetectably small, e.g. a thorn prick. Surgical treatment is often necessary and has a success rate of about 75%. Medical treatment can be done but success is probably more like 25%. Laminitis can occur in the opposite foot due to the extra weight bearing when a severe lameness is present, and can often be severe and difficult to treat.

If your old horse had an infected joint and developed contralateral limb laminitis as a result of this then it may have been euthanased due to the severe lameness and poor prognosis.

Thanks, i can't really supply more information as i only have "after a month of problems which started with pastern lameness, went on to stress laminitis and then leg joint infection." He wasn't old, just can't believe he is gone, really though i would get him back one day.
