Whether grapes are poisonous or harmful to horses. Not something I would have thought about feeding but my TB was stealing them from me tonight whilst I was trying to sort his stable, seemed to enjoy them and I thought they would be a good thing to put in his decahedron with his hi fi nuts. I have no idea though, whether they would do him any harm, not talking lots, just a handful now and then!! What does anyone think?

No idea, but they can be extremely poisonous to dogs! Learnt this fairly recently, even though my 14year old lab has been eating them for years without any trouble (have now stopped though). Apparently some dogs can react very badly to them as they are quite poisonois (even in relatively small amounts)

EDIT: Just did quick google search and looks like they're fine for horses. With dogs both grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.

hope this helps

Mine love grapes! I take them to competitions because they are one of the few things I actually want to eat when I'm competing - but if I'm not careful they're gone before I have a single one!

With respect to potatoes ...

the starch part is not healthy but the outer skin is a rich source of vitamin. Cleaned the pealings can be given as a 'extra' in the winter. I would not advise using the pealings as a main meal.

Oops, ours always have the leaves and stalks from broccoli and cabbage

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. Che normally checks my pockets for polos but tonight he found the grapes and before I could stop him he'd tipped them out and was hoovering them up off the floor. I thought once he realised they weren't minty he'd spit them out but he seemed to really like them. Now I know they're safe I'll pop a few in his treat ball, they are just the right size to fit through the hole.

Just looking through that list again reminds me, back in September he would help himself to blackberries from the hedgerow whilst we were hacking out. I would stop to help myself to a few and he would put his nose into the briars and just help himself. Remember thinking at the time, what an odd horse he was, but perhaps he just likes to follow a varied, healthy diet!!

In the summer our horse eats plums, pears and greengages that fall from the trees into his field. One day he had eaten all the ones off the floor that I saw him reach up to a branch and shake the tree hard till more fell. Then when we go round picking up the droppings the plum stones are whole in the poos! But oddley he wont eat the apples.
