Does anybody ride and lead?

Just found a pic I took last night.. Nelly is looking slightly dopey/ unsure! And I've just realised she has a dorsal stripe!

Good co ordination for the pic! It might be easier to use her reins, with the far one passed through the bit. I think that helped steering.
I used to canter, jump ditches and hunt jumps and do all sorts.

Thanks! Yeah I looped a long rope through her bit and over her poll like for lunging, reins sound easier though!

Tried it last night as I was short of time, rode the schoolmaster and lead the 4 year old. Mostly went okay, apart from when the youngster decided to be terrified of cows and swapped sides and we got in a bit of a tangle! Does anybody ride and lead regularly or is it deemed too unsafe? Must say I got a few very strange looks!

ETA - we even had a little trot! :D

Yes do and have done for years.

With scary things I would be inclined to go with another rider till you de - sensitize your youngen to cows. Then the ride and lead would be safer.

A bit like pony and trap try and get horses de-sensitized to them solo before you ride and lead.

I used to do it a lot when I had two horses to exercise and not much time. Have also led small son and his pony off my horse for quite lengthy hacks.

My friend at work was saying that as a child they used to get their young ponies used to being ridden out by leading them off an older, experienced horse.

A hunt yard nearby exercises their horses ride and lead. They seem to lead off a headcollar while I would always prefer a bridle.

Coming home the other day I came past two people out riding, side by side, with the chap (wearing shorts!) leading a horse off his, but on the off side so next to the traffic.

no but I would love to! but I don't think I could trust my old mare to be a good influence on the young boy! she jogs too much, she'd teach him bad habits! and she'd probably try to bite him loads! she likes her own space!

She lived on a cow farm for a year :D just had a 'moment' when she spotted them. She's an extremely calm girl, got clipped for the first time today and I'm not sure she even noticed!
