Question as above. My boy has a tight, high double whorl and can be very much as studies have suggested - split personality, intelligent an wary of new things.

Anyone have any thoughts or is it a load of old fashioned superstitious nonsense?

The double whorl indicating as you say is the only one I have ever paid any attention to, definately true for two horses I know but they were both welsh Ds, which I think was probabpy more indicative of personnality than whorls ;)

They think the hair pattern develops in the womb at the same time as brain development (I don't know who or how they proved this) and studies have shown that horses with certain whorl
Patterns have similar reactions to different situations. I have been trying to find a link to post but have lost it. Have a google - lots o info on it.

Still sounds pretty dubious to me. If such studies have been done they will have been published though.

Even if the two things developed at the same time (surely lots of things do?) I can't see why that means one is linked to the other.

i have a horse with a whorl over his heart (never seen one there before him on another horse) and in his breed its a sign of bad luck... but then most things about him are a sign of bad luck on him according to their myths and legends :o

"In the early history of the breed, certain white markings and whorls were considered to be indicators of character and good or bad luck. Horses with white socks on their feet were considered to have good or bad luck, depending on the leg or legs marked. A horse with no white markings at all was considered to be ill-tempered and vice-ridden, while certain facial markings were considered representative of honesty, loyalty and endurance.[12] Similarly, hair whorls in various places were considered to show good or bad luck, with the most unlucky being in places where the horse could not see them – for example the temples, cheek, shoulder or heart. Two whorls near the root of the tail were considered a sign of courage and good luck."

my horse is fully black with a whorl over his heart and cheek. he has a lovely temperment so i dont believe it :o

The changing name thing was a common way for a horse to lose a few years off its age too. This could prove very unlucky for the multiple owner along the line.

That is so interesting ! I've never heard this before. My boy has loads of whorles. He does also have two prophets thumb marks which I was told was very lucky :D

I'll only believe it when there's scientific proof. Really, being intelligent & wary of new things are traits that most owners would describe their horse as having. And depending how you choose to interpret it, its not hard to think of situations showing pretty much every horse has a split personality.

I've read the science article, its not exactly conclusive research. They only found double or elongated whorls on forest raised horses, & suprisingly they were more cautious than stable raised horses. Too few horses, sorry still not convinced.

My mare has a double facial whorl and I read somewhere (quite possibly on here :) ) that the direction of the facial whorl indicated which 'side' the horse favoured. So clockwise right sided, anti-clockwise left sided. My mares are going in opposite directions, which should mean that she is ambidextrous, which is interesting because I am :)

My horse has double whorls. He is thick, easy going and bold. :P

My sharp, intelligent and wary horse has one whorl

My friend's horse had a double whorl on its forehead (again a Section D). We used to joke that they were left when the devil horns fell off.

Lol

My TB has a double whorl on his forehead. I was told by his physio, who was very impressed by it, that it meant a very special horse.
Not sure if she meant special or 'speshul'!

I have one with a triple whorl (he's Spanish; they have lots of strange whorly things not found on "normal" horses), and he's quite crazy. The Spanish do have a lot of horse folklore about whorls - and this boy certainly bears it out!

Randomly when me and my friends were about 12 we always said that horses with 2 whorls on their heads were "mad" by that we thought they were the sharp/naughty ones and we often fell off!! Self fulfilling prophecy I think with that example but it is interesting

have you ever looked at tellington touch linda tellington has a great book telling the personalities of horse with whorl's

its called getting in touch with horses

My tb mare had a double whorl on her forehead. A visitor was fascinated by it, and said that it indicated a very kind, loving nature. Which was true.

How funny, I doubt there is much evidence but its a bit of fun. I've just studied pictures of my horse for whorls, one on the cheek and one on the forehead, never really looked at them before :-)
