I think I may be needing a filly to go out with my old chap (33 year old) on very good grazing.I am thinking of a youngster as it will cope with good grazing.

I have been offered a mare as a loan but to be honest i dont like the thought of being responsible for someone elses horse. It would be awful if it went down with laminitis or had an accident.
I could breed from my mare but that doesnt actually solve the immediate problem. Also she could give birth to a colt a colt which would be a nightmare if my old chap is still here in two years time! Plus I am not sure I want a foal as I have no back up as such. So not really an option. I would rather go for a yearling/2 year old that has had some basic manners put in place.

I have been having a look at the ad sites and just cant find anything.
I dont want a world beater. I want a nice dressage horse that is capable of going to medium level but will also hack out and do a few crosscountry rides. Temperament is paramount. I dont need amazingly talented. Been there and have the scars to show for it. She has to be a nice person and this is more important than huge potential although some potential is important. Most of the time I have to deal with them on my own. I dont mind something that is lively to ride (would prefer it) but must be fairly straightforward on the ground bar the baby tantrums. Good conformation is important so maybe something that would show at County level?

Everything I have seen advertised, that I like, is way out of my league ability wise and pricewise or they are miles away (as in Scotland). Yet I know the horses are out there!

So if anyone knows anyone who breeds this sort of horse, in the South of England, (100 miles radius of Newbury give or take) please let me know!

We do!
Seeing as I am on the one who has to get on them first, I try and make sure our babies are sane and sansible, without having to sacrifice talent and athleticism.

We're a bit more than 100miles from you though, 160 in fact.

Well - I figure I'm 115 miles from Newbury and I've got a very nice IDSH yearling filly - and 3 x 2 year old fillies. All well socialised and well mannered, good with the farrier - they all move well, a couple of them exceptionally well, and I've backed full sisters/brothers of all of them and can vouch for the sane and sensible. All by my stallion, out of NH bred TBs or TBx hunter mares. All nicely put together and would show.

google search Trefeinon Horses- they breed lovely horses which move nicely and also jump (from very small breeding herd they have had Advanced eventing horses including 3*** and 4****).

but the temperament is honestly the best i have ever known. i have had 3 from there and they were all the most beautifully tempered mares, easy to break and so willing in their work as well as being real softies in the yard.

and extremely well priced indeed- all of mine were under £1500!

near Leominster so bit further than you want but honestly well worth the trip.

Yes, I strive to get sane sensible allrounders all of which love doing things. They are intelligent willing and enjoy human company. The yealings out for walks on the lanes are not bothered about going home but what is round that next corner?

This year at the new Forest Show virtually the whole class of older horses balked at the vintage motor bikes going past, the yealing thought they were interesting!

I think that there are quite a lot of breeders on here who aim to breed exactly what you are looking for : someone else who has made it her life's work to breed sane and trainable horses is henryhorn on here - you might want to PM her, as she has very many happy clients I believe who are thrilled with the temperaments of the horses that they have bought from her

Oh thank you kindly for the recommendations, I do tend to hope that the horses I sell then sell the rest at home because their owners rave about them.
There are many of us on the forums who take temperament very seriously, to my mind it is no good having the potential without trainabilty and soundness to go with it.

I think you should pm and visit 'The last word' on here, this is her website

She bred our horse Renkum Raphael and has his full brother as a stallion still and has some youngstock by him.
Rafi is the sanest horse ever but at the age of 4 he qualified for his first winter BD champ and has now done 3, he has qualified this year for the summer BD champs, he is 7 and the most genuine horse you could find. Claire's 3 year old daughter rides him at shows from the arena to the horsebox, yet he can get 70% plus and is going to the Home International.
Good luck

I did think of you HH but was not sure if you had any fillies!

It has to be a filly as my old chap has punch ups with boys and I cant risk that for either him or a youngster, but he does need a companion or he will fret. I cant put a pony in with him as he needs so much grazing. My others have to have restricted grazing to an extent. He has been a pain in the neck all his life LOL!

I have always said he will come back to haunt me!

I love him really!

I would second the Trefeinon horses - they're lovely - brought up to be horses out on the hills - really level headed with fab temperaments. One of his stallions - Old Leighlin - sire of Lucinda Frederick's 3* horse Rumpy Pumpy - was the huntsman's horse for the Ledbury - really good temperament he seems to pass on to his youngstock

I know of a really lovely yearling filly - moves, well put together, nicely brought up. She is in Scotland BUT with cheap flights Easyjet, Ryanair - it would probably cost you less to see her than the fuel to drive 200 miles..... just a thought! She's about half an hour from the airport..... :P

I have a very nice yearling Hannovarian filly, fab temperamant, bred to jump and dressage. She is the first to great you in the field and will walk along the road past buses etc. She has world class bloodlines.
I am in Wiltshire.
